Ferguson's kids are all right 11:53am on 02 Dec 2009 The standard of football played in the Premier League is higher now than it was when the 90s kids came through. I'm not taking anything away from them - they were great players and some still are - but it was easier to break through because the competition wasn't as hot as it is now. Back then, United were the only team who ever got anywhere in Europe (apart from that spirited Leeds performance one year) whereas now, it was a surprise and a disappointment for English football that Liverpool have failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

What I'm getting at, is that these players - Gibson, Obertan, Wellbeck and a few others are quite possibly as good as their predecessors, but it has taken them a little longer to become good enough because 'good enough' these days, is a bit better.

Tevez a sound deal for Man City 10:40am on 14 Jul 2009 Seems like, although they're splashing the cash around, the owners are allowing Hughes to choose the players now, rather than trying to grab the biggest names possible to put them on the map.

As a utd fan, I agree that the fans' liking for Tevez was a little over-the-top, he was good and always gave everything which is what Utd demand.

Now I think their booing will be just as loud - he's clearly all about the money. Utd did want to keep him and were trying to make a deal but he made out like they didn't want him to get press and up his profile to make sure he and Joorabchian got as much cash as possible. And it worked.
Everything will change 3:30pm on 01 Feb 2009 Whatever happens, we know that we all will suffer financially.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a way of ensuring that those of us to whom no blame can be apportioned could be pardoned?

My only debt is my mortgage, which itself is far far less than I could have borrowed at the time. Everything else I saved to buy and even now that this whole mess has caused me to lose my job, I'm still not borrowing. My savings - which are minimal due to the fact that my salary was the only thing that wasn't increasing over the last two years - are quickly disappearing but I'm doing any work that I can get to help pay the bills.

It would be wonderful if innocent folk such as myself could be in some way immunised against the recession. As it is, we're going down too.

I hope all the plastic-wielding credit guzzlers of this country (and others) are pleased with their four wheel drive monster trucks, 40" flat-screen tvs and iPhones. Perhaps they can sit out the recession looking through the photos taken on their 4-star all expenses paid holidays in paradise?
Why punish savers? 09:32am on 04 Dec 2008 Indeed. Because of this mess - which I believe is mostly attributable the people who borrow, spend, move money about and never actually pay for anything (and the financial concerns who feed them) – my company have been making losses and now I’ve been made redundant.

I’ve been sensible all along. I save my money to pay for things and I had a tiny amount in the bank to help me get through a situation such as the one I find myself in now. I’ve paid the price for living in a country full of borrowers and lenders and to try to keep the country going it looks I’m going to be paying even more.

When things improve, the banks should be made accountable and a) start using their profits to secure their future and b) start putting money back into the economy by way of increased interest rates on their accounts to make up for the losses that savers will be making now.

Ethnicity and the five-year-old 3:43pm on 20 Oct 2008 I think this is very interesting and important but also brave.

Many of the areas discussed show results that are understandable but the variation in results is surprisingly high. I would imagine that some of the differences will level out as the children develop.

Of course this is going to provoke discussions centred on opinions of ethnic grouping (as a middle class white British person I think I can safely say that that type of discussion will mainly be from white middle class British people). You cannot carry out a study separating out each and every origin - where do you start and how far back do you go?! In studies such as this, each participant (or in this case, their parent/s) usually select their ethnicity themselves. And they should know!

This is a scientific study and is worthwhile. But some people will miss the point.
A fairer society? 10:57am on 20 Oct 2008 I don't begrudge the poorest getting a little more but of course I do feel a little hard done by because I'm one of the few people who haven't been living beyond their means.

My company has struggled and haven't been able to give me a rise at all this year - no increment and no inflation. I've been sensible all along (I bought an affordable flat when I could probably have borrowed a lot more, I don't have credit cards or loans and I don't buy expensive luxury items) but now I have little to show for it and redundancy is also a possibility.
The Pigeon Detectives - 'Say It Like You Mean It' 12:27pm on 16 Oct 2008 I agree with the above comments. It may be slightly less monotonous than previous singles but it's still a poor attempt. Lyrically very weak and musically unimaginative.

There are so many better bands out there that deserve to be a successful as this over-rated lot (if you want an example, have a listen to The Loungs).
Newsnight special - Monday 13th October 3:44pm on 13 Oct 2008 Blame can be split 70-30. 70% is the fault of the banks for dishing out credit cards, loans and mortgages too readily and investing badly in unstable areas. But the other 30% is the fault of the customers.

It's quite simple: banks and building societies hold customers' money and invest it to make more which then allows for interest, loans/credit etc and also of course, juicy bonuses. These days, very few people save up to buy something and choose instead to take out a loan or put it on a credit card. If no one is saving their money, the banks don't have it to spend and more must come from investment gain. And if the customer is daft enough to take accept a mortgage way over what they can afford, or max out three credit cards with holidays, cars, and the latest electronic equipment then they have to take some of the blame on themselves for the failing economy.

It doesn't matter which way you look at it - 100% of blame is in the hands of people who are greedy and either too stupid to think of the consequences, or too reckless to care.
