Not very significant at all Robert is the short answer.
For the past few months NuLabour has been promising every pressure group ever conceived, and some yet not conceived,every thing they desire and some things they did not even know they desired.
The long answer is that this is the most dishonest Govt for a very long time. If there really is any justice in the world history should name them for the disgrace they really are.
Weather update. 09:28am on 16 Sep 2009 Instead of the UK being divided into regions, why not by more specific weather conditions ?
eg. "The following areas should expect Heavy\Persistent\Showery etc rain this morning (afternoon)
The following areas can expect Prolonged\Hot\Warm etc sunshine up to
midday (from midday) etc.
and so on.
Thus the listeners attention is drawn to the prevailing or expected conditions first and can make their own connection with the UK region of particular interest to them as a result.

If indeed you are not British, let me explain;
Every household in the UK must pay £140 per annum as a tax (called Licence fee) irrespective if the watch BBC TV or not, Failure to pay results in being taken to Court.
I am a big fan of BBC and rarely watch (or listen) to any other channel. I do not subscribe to SKYTV at all.
Nonetheless the BBC has a very clear and fixed agenda, that agenda is absolute and can, if it desires, ignore popular opinion,
At least with commercial broadcasting the customers must at least play a role in the network policy.
The BBC is,without question, an excellent organisation, a world leader, but it offers little scope for competition.
What is it afraid of ?
What future for media and journalism? 6:02pm on 29 Aug 2009 If the BBC is so good and Mr Murdoch is so awful. Do away with the licence fee and let the Great British Public decide to whom their money will go.
A tip for the next "big earner" ?
Watch where the middle classes steer their siblings towards.
As for the usual "armchair socialism" of some contributors. I would remind them that "The print unions" fought tooth and nail to avoid their stranglehold on the media being lifted.

They don`t have to be feed and watered.
You asked about a book never finished; In 1954 for `O` level we were given Josef Conrad "The Rover" which I just could not get into, and after a sports accident had the perfect excuse not to finish it.
In the following 55 years I have become a big Conrad fan and have almost a complete library of his novels and short stories.
I still cannot get interested in The Rover despite many attempts and it is still not read.
PS I still, however, passed 0 Level Lit.

Living where I do, it is impossible not to have had connections with Austin/Rover. BMC/British Leyland/and every other combination tried at Longbridge. In fact almost everyone I know had some connection with Longbridge,including my own family.
As was once said "BL make just as good a car as anyone else, only trouble is they only make one of them a week"
The Allegro: The Marina: The Austin Princess/ The Cambridge,all failures,even the Mini was madeat at a loss until BMW took over.
The management "did the dirty" on Honda as anyone connected with the motor industry will tell you, hence Honda went elsewhere and is still there.
Let me give you just one story that was common knowledge at the time.
When BMW took over some of the senior line management staff came over from Germany. Naturally they were all nicknamed "Herman" and any attempt by them to install "German work practices" were constantly sabotaged, even having their lockers broken into.
So "fed up" were BMW that they actually were quite prepared to give Longbridge away. When told they could not, they sold it for £5 and left, taking one of my neighbours sons back with them because he was to bl...dy good for that lot at Longbridge.
We wasted millions upon millions of pounds.
Now we have a whole series of former employees working as self employed gasfitters/electricians/plumbers/ all doing a better and more worthwhile job than they every did in Northfield, and irony of ironies working well.

It defrauded the taxpayer for years. The only difference was it became more blatant once BMW threw in the towel.At least they genuinely tried.

Without being flippant I too may (probably did) think like you.
Alas, I am now 71, and (sadly) wiser.
PS I have a son 40 years who has never owned a car He is no happier than my other son (38) who does.

How about "Life" ? Itcan be lived in reduced and or pain (physical or mental or both)for 70/80 years, being "sustained" by modern medicines etc
Not pleasant but statisically sound.
"Prosperity without growth" is just a silly slogan. Just stop and think.
Your sons/daughters reach 17years they want a car/motorbike just like their friends. Later they (just like their friends) want to marry. They do not want to live at home with their parents, they want "their own place"(even if rented)
And so on and so on.
Would they be any happier without them ?
I very much doubt it.
Who will volunteer to be the first Parent to tell them that "Actually fedualism was quite a good scheme"
All that education, so much knowledge, so little wisdom.
Should we trust the regulators? 12:51pm on 15 Jun 2009 I really do not see any problem in allowing Bankers or any other entrepreneur make fortunes, so long as the rest of us prosper.
Most "frauds" are based on the victims own sense of avarice.
A 18th Century (I think)Lord Chief Justice of England once quite correctly said "As long as I am The Chief Justice it will never be a crime for one man to make a fool of another"
