Facebook - growing up fast 10:30am on 05 Jul 2009 The web certainly does change fortunes quickly, for the good and bad, but have FaceBook thought of having a subscription service so that we can get rid of all those adverts and have a less irritating experience? I am sure it would attract even more members - it worked for Hotmail and Yahoo Plus.

Broadband Britain - how fast, how far? 11:34am on 08 Sep 2008 It is all very well BT and Virgin talking about bringing ultra-fast broadband to Britain, as defined by the map but here in rural Cumbria all BT can supply is a dial-up service that, at best, works around 16kbps (yes, that’s right 16kbps!). How about some investment in rural communities to bring them up to date first. From the map, it looks as this new investment is going to create an even bigger digital divide between urban and rural communities

Thank goodness, for private investment and microwave broadband that affords us a dedicated 10MB connection and all for £19.99 a month. The availability of broadband was a deal breaker for us when deciding where to live and I am sure, in today’s world, it would be for many others.

It could of course just be one of those clever marketing ideas, dreamt up by some whiz kid and costing a great deal of dollars, to make something so bad that everyone just has to watch it - job done.

Broadband poverty - a 1% problem? 09:38am on 18 Jul 2008 I know many people that are in 'broadband poverty' and only live a short distance from a broadband enabled exchange, even in city centres. It is crazy in this day and age that simple signal boosters cannot be placed along the line.

I live on the top of a remote fell in Cumbria and can only get a dial-up connection from BT, it was touch and go even getting a landline! Thanks to our Regional Development Agency who wanted to tackle 'broadband poverty' they have subsidised a microwave link service; we now have a 10MB dedicated link that beams across the fells to a base station.

99% coverage of the UK is just not good enough!
Should Mugabe be tried for war crimes? 1:24pm on 20 Jun 2008 Mugabe should have been indicted a long time ago, why is it taking so long to bring this man to justice for his horrific crimes against humanity.

The rest of the world should be ashamed for its slow and relative ineffective measures to prevent him from continuing in power and causing so much hardship and suffering.

How about looking into the reason, and effect, of politicians making decisions to ensure the continuance of their own party rather than making the right decisions for the country on our behalf.

As soon as a party gets into power they seem to forget that we put them there and they are supposed to represent our views, as their term in office progresses they appear to forget this and take the attitude of we know what is best for you.

If the governing party could be held to account more frequently during a term of office, say by taking note of on-line polling by voters, perhaps more people would become interested in politics!
How do we escalate this job? 10:23am on 20 Jun 2008 Surly there is enough technical expertise in the web team to sort this problem out and bring your new screen into life? But then again I imagine that all manner of rules and regulations will prevent you from doing so!
Digital Britain - are we there yet? 08:24am on 23 May 2008 All these figures can be very misleading, less people live in rural areas so 59% of what [number of households] are connected, and what quality of service do rural areas get? Do we need to redefine 'broadband' and what its starting point is?

I am lucky, I live on the top of a very isolated fell in Cumbria but have a dedicated 10Mb microwave link, funded by the development agency to prevent rural isolation.
My so-called digital life 11:02pm on 10 May 2008 Monday will, no doubt be full of headlines about this next move by Google.

Whilst I am a fan of Google and its products, if only because they are very reliable and fast, will the sharing of our digital footprint across sites mean that we will loose control of, or know, where any of our data is, or who can access it, I fear so.

Developers of the Internet will have to instil confidence into users about the security of our personal data if they wish us to continue to use their services.
