Stanford parade raises serious concerns 3:39pm on 31 Oct 2008 Isn't Aggers really bemoaning the spirit with which this is all being carried out? It's the symbolic damage that is being done to the game by the crass and vulgar way the Stanford series has proceeded that is the problem, rather than anything being wrong with big money or 20/20 per se. In some quarters the phrase 'not cricket' still stands for a lot, and I find it hard to disagree with Aggers when he protests, on many levels, that this is just 'not cricket'.
The most divisive and tasteless selection in cricket history 6:03pm on 09 Sep 2008 Wouldn't it be wonderful if the players donated their prize money to cricket-based charities so that the ECB and Stanford could see that at least the players were interested in investing in the game, and not just in themselves. Won't happen, of course, but it would be the cricketing thing to do. I for one would applaud any man who made such a gesture, and would bet that that man's fame and status would live much longer (and be worth much more in the long run) than that of the man who simply banked the lot.
The most divisive and tasteless selection in cricket history 4:33pm on 09 Sep 2008 Re: no. 6. The ECB could at least have had the temerity to explain some of the values of the game to Mr. Stanford. A big money match is all very well, but this puts way too much emphasis on individual stars and will only do good for TV companies and not cricket. Imagine what $20million could do as seed money for grass-roots cricket and coaching in England. If either Stanford or the ECB really cared about the future of the game, and not just the immediacy of its celebrity status via 20/20 then this format would not have been acquiesced in. I think, therefore, that Aggers is absolutely right in his castigation of it.
Can sorry South Africa fight back? 4:27pm on 27 Aug 2008 "Disinterested" means neutral, unbiased. I think you were aiming for "uninterested" Aggers. Otherwise spot on as usual.
Lack of runs costs emotional Vaughan 9:19pm on 03 Aug 2008 National captaincy was the making of another impetuous and somewhat self-serving prodigy by the name of David Beckham. Eyebrows were raised at the time, but it turned out to be something of a masterstroke. That's not to say that the same thing would work with KP, but being bold and foreward thinking would be a revolutionary move for the powers that be in English cricket, so why not? It would be absurd to bring in someone from the outside, not currently part of the England dressing room, and expect them to lead; Strauss seems to be me to be in the same situation as Vaughan in terms of regular runs, and in any case doesn't look like a likely leader; so perhaps KP is the only reasonable option.

As for Vaughan, what a noble act. The team had not looked good for a while, and always gave the impression that 50-1 would turn into 50-3, largely due to the captain's form. As a team player, it is the ultimate in humility to know when to step aside. I only hope that the selection for the Oval is worthy of the hole left by this great skipper.
Old Trafford outcome in balance 7:42pm on 25 May 2008 Another thought: I agree with Shermo that Anderson has to go. Certainly can't complain with his recent wickets haul, but the price those wickets come at is disturbing, especially against mediocre batsmen. The South Africans and Aussies will have him for breakfast. Hoggard must come back, and the sooner he is joined by Fred the better.
Old Trafford outcome in balance 7:35pm on 25 May 2008 Exciting it may be, but the cause is (to a large extent) poor cricket. Against decent opposition both of these sides would not stand a hope, and I fear for England's chances later in the summer and can not see them coming close in the Ashes on this form.
