Is Obama serious about climate change? 00:50am on 26 Nov 2009 MArk what you have to understand is that the presidential pardoning of Turkey's is date back awhile. It is one of the Holiday traditions of this country. Btw Happy Thanksgiving. I know you'll probably be watching the Europa League tomorrow while the rest of the country is watching Football, lol. That's another thanksgiving tradition.

Anyrate, I think the fact that Obama is serious obout climate change is a good thing. It shouldn't come as a surprise as Democrates have shown more concern over environmental issues than the Republicans.
A triumph of justice? 10:08pm on 13 Nov 2009 I'll be honest that I don't see why all there is all this fuss about where these suspects are tried. I believe New York City is more than capable of hosting this trial and giving the suspects a fair trail. Legally, New York City is the first place that should be considered because it is where the crimes took places. It is how the criminal justice system is supposed to work. Otherwise, it would be a bit like trying Jack the Ripper in Glasgow, when the crimes took place in London.

AS for shiek MOhemded, can see the logic in trying him seperately in a military base. The reason it clear. He is accused of mastermining the bombing of the USS Cole. Because this crime took place onboard a military vesel the Military should have jurisdiction over where this trial takes place. This is the way that it should be.
Waiting for deliverance 4:05pm on 04 Nov 2009 As I wrote on 606, I have given up on Analysis. The reason I have given up on analysis is that their is a tendency by so called experts to over anaylyze what actually happened. There are a lot of things that need to be said about off year election that aren't being taken into account. Especially in the case of this President

1. Voter turn out tends to be lower than in a Presidential election. Where as the Presidential year tends to get a turn out of about 60-65%, the turnout for elections the following year tends to be around 30-35%. PArt of this is a feeling by those who voted for the winning candidate becoming neglect and taking things for granted.

2. The approval ratings for President Obama are extremely high in both Jersey and Virgina. The problem was that the candidate who ran this time was really rather weak and unable to articulate his own vision. In the case of Virginia, Corzine was never really liked and was there was actually a third party candidate who may have influence the outcome of the race.

I think there has been too much over analysis.

As I said yesterday, the Biggest race of the night may well have been the 23rd Congressional District in New York. If you haven't heard, for the first time in 150 years, a Democrat will be representing that district in the House of Representatives. The reason this race drew so much attention was because it exposed a major split with in the Republican Party. IT exposed the way the extreme right of the Republican party is conducting a war with party moderates. It is a battle that will continued to be waged in next years congressional elections. The sad thing is, that if the conservatives had swallowed their pride and backed the Republican candidate they would have won that seat. Instead theyre quest for ideological purity has cost them an election and will continue to cost them elections.
Republican revival in Virginia? 02:17am on 04 Nov 2009 Mark, I have to be honest with you about the State of Virginia(Named after Queen Elizabeth I) and tell you why it SHOULD NOT BE viewed as a referendum on the Obama Administration. Over the last 32 years, the party that wins the NAtional Election and is in the White House has always lost the governors race in Virginia going back to 1977. This has been true under both Democratic and Republican Administrations. Virginians like be contrarian. In many respects, they like to be in opposition to the Whitehouse and I don't think they would be happy with a governor who was of the same party as the President.

Republican revival in Virginia? 2:47pm on 03 Nov 2009 Mark I have to be honest with you. You're paying attention to the wrong race. By far, the most interesting race this election season is the special election to fill the vacant seat in the 23rd Congressional District here in New York. This district, which straddles the Canadian border, was being contested by three candidates until a few days ago; when Republican Candidate Dede Scozafava dropped out of the race and endorced Democratic Candidate Bill Owens.

The interesting thing about this race is that many conservative memembers of the Republican Party including Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Armey, Michele Bachman and Fred Thompson have all endorsed and or campaigned for the Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman a wealthy business man who doesn't even live in the district. He maintains a summer home within the district but his main residence is actually in Lake Placid. The reason they chose to back the third is because they felt that Scozafava (I appologize if I have misspelled her name) was too liberal on social issues to beconsidered a "republican."

This poses a problem for the Republican party as they seem to be ideologiccal purity than they are in passing legislation. The problem with this is that you can not get many candidates elected and you definately can not get your legislative agenda passed. The Republicans seem to be more interested in getting rid of moderates. Because of this many moderate republicans such as Lincoln Chaney are no longer involved in politics. It's really a shame.
A president for clangorous times? 12:00pm on 19 Oct 2009 The problem with this war is that When BUSH decided to send in troops he made no attempt to understand the culture or how they would respond before he sent in troops. He was simply acting out of anger and was seeking revenge. And as it happened, Bush nearly managed to pull defeat out of the Jaws of Victory when he allowed Bin Laden to escape. Then instead of trying to bring Bin Laden to justice, Bush decided to go to war in Iraq; claiming that the Iraqi Government had "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and were harboring "terrorists" when the fact of the matter was Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and became a haven for terrorists after the US invaded.

REpublicans are trying to portray what is going on in Iraq as Obama's fault. They want the public to believe that all EIGHT YEARS of mismanagement of this war is Obama's fault. They never want to take responsiblity for thier own failures.
A prize deserved? 01:45am on 10 Oct 2009 I don't agree with what Ambassador Bolton is saying, because to my mind people like Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, and Martin Luther King have actually deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. I think Republicans like John Bolton need to take a good long look in the mirror, because if they do that they will find that their party has done Nothing to advance the cause of World Peace over the last 40 odd years. In fact, they have raised the tensions making the US Public Enemy Number One in the eyes of the World. Reagan's solution to a global Problem was to turn up the Rhetoric and order a few F-16's to go on a bombing mission. Let's also remember that he approved the Arms for Hostages deals with Iran that made the middle east a much more dangerous place and helped the spread of Radical Islam. He did nothing to settle the long standing dispute between the Isreali's and Palestinians.

Bush decided to invade Iraq, inspite of the fact that the job in Afganistan had not been finished. He made Iraq a haven for terrorists. How does that deserve the Nobel Prize for Peace?

The reason I find it disturbing is the fact that these people on the right simply are willing to say anything, just so long as it disagrees with a liberal democrat. They are unwilling to accept that occassionally the Democrats will come up with a good idea. They refuse to accept anyones right to govern the country other than themselves. They refuse to accept the results of elections. If they lose an election it some how becomes illegitimate. That's is what worries me.
