Rather the back room dealing that has typified the Brussels process is continuing in grand style and that, incidentally, may well finish off Mr Blair's chances of gaining the president's post.

You sound as though you would regret Mr Blair not getting the post. Some of us have particular and so far little reported reasons for wondering whether he is really a suitable candidate.

Hopefully, news of more forthright ministerial discussions about future public spending plans will be noted by Labour's conference managers. Provision needs to be made for delegates to add their contributions to the debate in Brighton the week after next. If Labour wants to protect its core vote and reconnect to the millions more that might now be out of work had it not been for swift intervention by Brown and Darling last Autumn, it needs to think more about giving members a say in what goes in the next manifesto.

You assert "Brown has lost the political argument". To whom? And about what? Labour's Liam Byrne was quoted as saying yesterday that Cameron's speech on spending cuts was "economically illiterate".

Latest polling data about which I have been blogging suggests that Brown is far from losing the argument.

Whether there is agreement or not on an independently audited review of previous claims, this proposal if agreed could help provide the public in general and Labour Party members with a benchmark against which to judge sitting MPs already selected to stand for re-election.

I have applauded those Labour MPs who have examined their conscience and appear to have done the right thing - an independent audit could help validate such actions if undertaken pdq.

Or Save the Labour Party could resurrect its campaign to get nomination papers circulated pre-Conference 2009 as some of us still think is required annually under Rule 4.B 2.B.ii.

This is in the interests of party democracy of course and not any particular candidate.

You state: Labour who've been left trailing in David Cameron's wake....I seem to recall two Labour backbenchers had already announced their intentions to repay monies much earlier than the CAmercon press conference.

The point I made on my blog was that there was a case for all MPs to examine their own consciences first before the Party Leaders/machine step in.

Then at least we, the public and/or party activists have a better chance of (re)assessing the abilities of the party representatives that we are either going to vote or campaign for.

All we are getting from the Tories now is top down Westminster village stuff. And of course that's what you report. There is, however, a role for improved governance of our political parties from the constituencies down to the Houses of Parliament, as well as a much stricter system of Parliamentary Allowances.

This whole Parliamentary expenses issue highlights the need for checks and balances from political party constituency level down to the House of Commons.

As a member of Labour's National Executive Committee, recently elected in the constituency section, I am taking soundings about what we should be doing when we meet next on 19 May. Labour Party members suggestions range from deselection of sitting MPs alleged to be on the make, repayment of expenses deemed to be for personal gain, to the need for a Code of Ethics for all Labour candidates standing at the next General Election.

These ideas are in addition to those currently under consideration by Parliament. Nevertheless, they are seen as part of the process of encouraging ethical behaviour on the part of Labour's elected representatives in line with Labour values.

10 October 2008 was an important date too. It changed our politics. Under a Labour Prime Minister the banking crisis was then tackled head on not just domestically, but internationally.

Thanks for enlightening us about the good and the great in their festive cups.

I share you stoicism about the VAT reduction. But I worry about the Tories' 'kitchenomics' and scaremongering about national bankruptcy.

As for the investment bankers wondering about where to invest, why not start to expose the obscene rates of return previously being sought by some of these people, and explore their role in the near collapse of the banking system?
