I don't think Mou risks being sacked. At least until the 2 legs with chelsea, in case we lose.

There have been worrying signs, though, most of all after the awful game in Barcelona. It wasn't all to be credited to Barca's strength: there are many ways of losing a game, you should show a bit of guts. Our president commented "we just didn't go to Barcelona", referring to the appalling performance. Second worrying sign: Mazzola, just before Rubin Kazan game, told Mourinho that either we go through or he goes away. Mourinho retorted "He doesn't pay my wages". Mazzola answered "Well, actually, I'm a shareholder, so I do. Mourinho should research better". Another sign of the nervy situation is Mou's appalling sentence "I am not paid to win the League or the Champions League, just to do my duty". What the hell does that mean, you tell me. Last worrying sign is his temper: press conferences are reduced to shy questions from journalists (one of them has been recently violently abused by him), followed by jeers and acid answers from Mourinho, and final chill. If we go down against Chelsea, it better happen in a dignified way, at least.

It wouldn't be the first time that Moratti kicks a manager away even if he still has to pay him for another year.

A thorough analysis would highlight the fact that we have very strong individual players, second to none. The goalie is one of the best in the world. The defence is prime quality. Maicon is arguably the best in his role. Good individuals in midfield, although Muntari is a joke and I hope he won't play. Sneijder is impressive, I'm falling in love with him. Eto'o is a bit out - at least he's not been showing enough up to now, but everyone knows what he could do. Milito scores good, Balotelli is unpredictable but can score at any time from any position.

So, we have the men. What I haven't seen is the team. And there's only one culprit: Jose Mourinho. It's not up to the players to create a team, it's up to the manager. He's being paid more than enough for that. What I saw in Barcelona is not worthy of a parish team coach. He's either going to step it up (and in that case Chelsea will face more than a problem) or he's going to suck money until the end of the year, and then back to his beloved Premier League, where people love to see him acting like a clown. In Italy everyone is already sick of him, and nobody gets bullied by him. He's stressed and wants to go away. Well, he better realize that if he wants to go away, a good Champions League performance would do him good, beacuse nobody would pay a loser as much as we are doing now.

So, according to the Oxford English Dictionary the Brazil vs. England game was a Derby, as it was an important sporting event?

Sorry, it doesn't make sense. The Derby HAS to have a geographical proximity, to justify the term. We call Palermo vs Catania "il derby di Sicilia", stressing out that they both come from Sicily.

Problems arise when people try to single out a "derby d'Italia", as it would mean singling out the 2 major teams: people start fighting whether it's Juve-Inter or Milan-Juve. Geography becomes too broad.

And that's exactly the point: you need a geographical proximity or a sum of similarities. There are none between Real and Barcelona.

They CAN speak Castillian, but their language is Catalan. I've 5 Catalan friends, they all speak Catalan everyday. That's their language.

The Madrid derby is REAL vs ATLETICO.

Other derbies are Inter vs Milan, Juve vs Torino, Man Utd vs Man City, Roma vs Lazio, Celtic vs Rangers.

I even had my face headbutted and my scarf stolen while fighting for the cause (Inter vs Milan, in my case): these are serious issues, please be precise.

I don't think that ironizing on the stupidity of italians who voted from Berlusconi could be depicted as "discussing Italy".

Anyway, you're right on one thing: let's give it a cut. I got dragged into this, but I am really not interested in involving foreigners into discussions about my country. We've enough problems ourselves.

You did not label me a Berlusconist, I quite clearly wrote "I read it between the lines". I think you had that suspicion.

But now I see you think I was a Veltronian (another Star Trek population)... well, wrong again. It doesn't really matter who I voted for, does it?

Sorry your URL couldn't be published. But I guarantee in Italy you'd find much more freedom of expression than you think, given the fact that Berlusconi's sex life went LIVE in pictures and published trascripts of recordings (For God's sake, if that's not freedom of expression...)

Last but not least, a funny anecdote: I recently posted a comment on the Times' website, joking about the fact that people were complaining about Berlusconi's control of the press - on a newspaper, the Times, owned by Rupert Murdoch, the owner of half of the world's media (certainly more than Berlusconi's), who has been at loggerheads with our PM for a few years. Something to meditate about...

Well, my comment was not published one, two, three times in a row. I stopped trying and just laughed.

To stick to Britain, the last time I read the Daily Telegraph, Celia Walden let herself go on a purely racist rant about italian men (all of them), their obsession with sex and the annoying way they speak. Did you mean THIS kind of journalism, Danremont?

As for Spain's newspapers, well, that's become personal vs. berlusconi, El Pais most of all. You know, they happen to have a very leftist government.

America's medias are pro or against him, depending whether you follow CNN, CBS, ABC or FOX.

Given the fact that you already labelled me as a Berlusconist, I read it through the lines, let me stress once again my point: you have the choice to choose between two positions; one sees half of italian voters as being stupid altogether (around 25 million of them, 5 times the population of your country). The other position would point towards other reasons for their vote: ideology (a completely unknown thing in Ireland, where Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have more or less the same policies), refusal of a certain leftist and statalist conception of politics, lack of alternative: this last one seems to be rather incisive.

There you go, here's the embryo of a more complicate explanation. Can you cope?

At any rate, I did not vote for him but I hate ignorant comments.

1) Do you want to make a list of politicians who consort with prostitutes? That'd be a long work, you know. There's a french one, for example, who's currently under criticism for consorting with minors (boys).

2) Media in the hands of berlusconi? Some. Not the 2 main newspapers for sure (Corriere, Repubblica) and not several TV shows (Annozero, Ballaro', Che tempo che fa, etc...) on the State TV and an entire State TV station (Raitre), firmly leftist and paid by the money of all taxpayers. If you wanna depict a new Mussolini, you've quite a long way to go.

3) Italians stupid? Yeah, you're right. Keep on believing it. And thanks for proving my points (see my post above).
