Why 'adolescent America' has to grow up 4:10pm on 26 Oct 2009 If you think the US is a country that is "tightly-buttoned, exaggerated deference, politeness and conformity" you need to take a driving trip from coast to coast. Get off the main highways and see what follows a "Pop. 2378" sign as well as New York and Chicago and Wichita. While you will in fact, see much of what you've described you'll also see more than your share of rudeness, individuality and 'stick it in your ear' attitudes than you'll imagine.
A case for healthcare reform? 4:22pm on 09 Sep 2009 I think whether you're for or against the president's healthcare plan depends on what your current healthcare plan is. If it's good, you hate the smart-aleck president's gall to change it; but if your current plan stinks, you can't wait for the wise president's care to give you something better.
Disappointment? 3:25pm on 05 Sep 2008 I haven't watched any of the speeches. My feeling is that whatever they say in an "important" speech like that is so filtered by their handlers that it bears little resemblance to what a candidate actually thinks - if they can even remember what they actually thought about an issue. I think those speeches are designed to say what the speech writers feel most people want them to say.
What's the most impressive sport? 01:17am on 21 Aug 2008 I don't really think you can compare the events to come up with the most "impressive." I think a person's knowledge of the sport plays a great deal. If you know nothing about shooting a pistol, comparing that sport to gymnastics or weight lifting seems like no contest. To me, lifting 200 kilos or hitting ten straight tens on a paper target is equally impressive, yet completely different.
Hands on with vintage gaming 2:49pm on 16 Jul 2008 Talk about inflation. I can remember playing electro-mechanical pinball machines and getting 9,000 was a big score - now it's in the millions.

Several years ago, when changing careers, I interviewed for a job fixing arcade machines and ended up getting hired by a telcom instead. I'm still not sure that was the better job...
Is rail the answer? 2:40pm on 14 Jul 2008 I don't really care who buys/runs the rails as long as they have trains. I often travel from Saginaw, Michigan to Toronto, Canada (500km). Driving takes about 5 hours, a bus (two available) takes either 9 or 15 hours. There's a train, but it takes 2 hours driving to get to. A few years ago, it was only an hour's drive away. We really need better train/bus service and if selling it off to the Brits will help, I'm all for it. (But please, no BR toilet paper).
In for a grilling? 2:43pm on 14 May 2008 I don't understand why a gallon of milk or loaf of bread is such a benchmark for relating to the "common man." I do my own grocery shopping and cooking and do it with a no-kid family income around the median. The best I can do is to say the little carton of milk I buy is around US$1.69 - I think it's a quart, but wouldn't bet money on it. And the last loaf of bread I bought is around US$2.

I don't know - does that make me elitist, stupid or just resigned to the fact that I have to buy a carton of milk no matter the cost within reason?
Intel Classmate - the Rufus review 3:52pm on 22 Apr 2008 Some people are still missing the point. Rufus isn't reviewing Windows vrs. Linux vrs. OSX, he's reviewing a piece of technology that offers choices of how it is to be used. The OS is completely superfluous as long as you can easily do what you want to do. He found the some things easier on the green box than on the blue box, not on the Linux or Windows computer. I have an XP computer at work, and an SP, iMac and XO computer at home. All of them do some things better or worse - but they all do basically the same - and I've crashed them all.
