Can European managers succeed in South America? 1:00pm on 26 Oct 2009 @ lennone - calling him a xenophobe seems a bit harsh, and a bit baseless.

Its an understandable viewpoint - big football countries should have the resources within to appoint a national coach of their own, and not need to import foreign coaches to do such a job.

Fair points, I suppose. No, Im not saying all United fans are beyond reproach - we have our fair share of ignorant fans, too. All clubs do, as you say.

But the way Real conduct their business has always left a nasty taste in the mouth - whether it be the bulldozing transfer policy that secured the likes of both Ronaldos, Figo, Zidane - or the way your club sacks coaches left, right and centre even when they are successful (see Del Bosque, Capello) and then moan about why you aren't winning titles every season.

Yes, of course United (and Barca, and other big clubs) buy players. All clubs do. But there is at least an attempt to commit to a youth policy of sorts at clubs like United and Barca. For all the imported names you mentioned in your post, you failed to mention the home-grown talents - Giggs, Scholes, Neville, Brown, O'Shea, Evans etc etc. Or Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Pique, Valdes, Puyol, Busquets etc etc. Where is the equivalent list at Real in the past 5 seasons? Yes, Raul and Guti and Casillas. But who else?

Finally - of course I will accept that Real Madrid is the most successful club in European football history, and one of the biggest in the world. But whilst you are 100% correct when you say that: "I also take it as a compliment - Outside traditional rivalries, a team is hated when it is succesful." - Real Madrid has been NOWHERE NEAR as sucessful in recent years as Manchester United. And Barca have been very successful - but I dont hate them. I wonder why....

Milan did not play in the champions league last season, they came fifth and missed out. Fiorentina qualified instead.

As for the knives being out for Pellegrini, and heavy criticism of Real and Benzema - all of this just makes me laugh. I, and many other United fans I'm sure, have a heavy distaste for Real Madrid for many (obvious) reasons. But this kind of attitude, if true, just says it all. Benzema is a young lad just joined a new league from a different country. Already people are on his back? Ridiculous! And the manager is under pressure for his job? After 6 wins from the first 7 games? Absurd!

Real Madrid is not a proper football club as far as Im concerned. I hope they win nothing this season. Again.

Fair enough, you have a fair point. It's just that I dont agree that he is "laughed at all over Europe" because of his so-called womanising. I think you'll find attitudes on the Continent towards a single, unmarried man's love life are a little bit more relaxed than our own (or, at least, those of the national press).

And my interest is more in what he is like as a manager of football teams. Yes, there can be arguments on either side about his acheivements, but its just that people's opinions of him as hopeless or useless or clueless (see #21 liongeorge, for example) are all premised on irrelevant considerations thrust upon people from the tabloid media.
Where would Sven exit leave Notts County? 12:44pm on 19 Oct 2009 I imagine this wouldnt be a massive blow to Notts County as long as their next appointment as manager is a solid, experienced man who is more than capable of managing the club without the interference of a Director of Football above him.

Sven gave the club a higher profile, as Simon Austin says. But for them to truly progress into the sort of club that the owners presumably aspire to, the real key is to appoint a manager capable of taking the team on to the next level.

And best of luck to Sven - the kind of ridicule and contempt he has been held in by people in this country since around 2005-06 has been unjustified, and completely instigated by the gutter press we have the misfortune of having here. He's a fine manager, with an excellent track record, on the whole.

The fact you call United_Red and I "Manc fools" for disagreeing with you would strongly suggest that, yes, you are NOT a fair-minded football supporter, but in fact nothing more than a wind-up merchant.

I am quite content to accept your point about Carragher and Scholes - perhaps they would get in the squad, perhaps they wouldnt. We can agree to disagree there.

But I'm sorry - I cant disagree with your overall point that only 4 or 5 of the current England squad are CL regulars. Yes - but for injury Brown would be a regular for Man Utd - I dont have to be SAF to say that with any confidence - the fact that he played pretty much every game at right back the season before last with a high degree of success (PL and CL trophies in the bag) strongly suggests that he would have continued in that position last season, and this.

Walcott - again, barring injury would be a regular for Arsenal in CL football. And what about the Coles of Chelsea? Why are you ignoring them? Carrick is as near as you can get to a regular at United (SAF rotates the team with regularity). As mentioned elsewhere - Johnson at Liverpool is their and England's current regular right back.

The point is this - you very clearly argued that there are not many English players playing in the Champions League. I put forward an alternative argument based on evidence. Im not arguing that the foreign players havent had a massive influence on the big 4's recent success in CL - of course they have. But to dismiss the English players' influence would be incorrect - certainly with respect to Man United, and to a slightly lesser extent Chelsea and Liverpool.

Anyway, it looks like you are on here with the sole purpose of picking a fight, so I will leave it there.

As a post-script - I have to say you are the only football fan I have ever had discourse with who insists on calling an appearance in the CL a "cap". It is not a "cap". A cap is the term used for an appearance for one's national team. It is based on the fact players would be/still are awarded actual bits of cloth headgear to denote each appearance in the national team. As far as I know, this process has never occurred in club football.

Im not entirely sure about the point you are trying to make - you waffle on for so long that any point you did have (if, indeed, there was any point to what you were saying) is completely lost amongst the inconsequential guff.

I replied to your post which, incorrectly, stated that there are only 4 or 5 players in the England squad who regularly play in the Champions League. I listed an XI of England players who, barring injury, would be first team regulars for their clubs. Ok, Foster may not have solidified such a place yet - but his last "cap" as you phrase it (you earn caps in international games by the way, not the Champions League) was not in 2008 as you say, but actually in United's game at Besiktas THIS SEASON.

The rest are all regular first team players who are key parts of their teams. Wes Brown was INJURED last season, otherwise he would have been a regular again. Just like he was the season before when he won the Champions League - indeed, he crossed the ball which Ronaldo headed in to make it 1-0 in the final vs. Chelsea.

I made no point about foreigners not being influential. I merely pointed out that your argument was misconceived. I withdraw the point about Carragher and Scholes, as you are probably correct that it is irrelevant. But to say neither of them would make the squad anyway? That is, of course, your opinion - but I suspect not an opinion that would be shared by the majority of fair-minded football supporters (of which you are not one, it would seem).

Also - you say he has not personally achieved enough in his career to set him apart from other English forwards.

Please tell me which of those forwards has been an integral part of a Premier League winning team for his club? Or a Champions League winning campaign? Or both?

This Rooney-hating has to end. NOW.

That ignores the likes of Hargreaves, who will hopefully soon be fit - and Scholes and Carragher who would almost certainly be in the squad were they not retired from international football.

So stop talking rubbish will you, please?
