Radio 4 goes to university 00:26am on 11 Jul 2009 Yes, yes, yes. Attracting students is exactly what Radio 4 should be doing. I'm a student and listen religiously, but also know that it has an awful lot to offer to friends who do not know Radio 4 so well.

This roadshow is an innovative way of, quite literally, bringing Radio 4 to students.

Films on Radio 4 7:29pm on 16 Feb 2009 On Desert Island Discs the media in question (music and books) are items that can be understood over the radio. By definition, films cannot. Don't bother with the question; you'll end up having to expand it to TV shows too.

With regard to the Film Programme, you neglect to mention that it's Sunday repeat has replaced The Learning Curve. So I think you ought to stop thinking about how to (further) increase film coverage and look at how to replace discussion of education issues.

Dissenting voices 11:02am on 22 Jan 2009 I heard the interview and my jaw hit the floor. It was so dreadful that I had no words to describe the horror I felt.

Robin Lustig interviewed sensitively but probingly, and was a credit to his impartial profession.

The World Tonight was absolutely right to broadcast the interview, and I'm so pleased you did.

Just because you don't like the views doesn't mean you have a right not to hear them, and certainly does not allow the BBC not to broadcast them.

Thank-you for the item, and I have no concerns that you will shy from such broadcasts in the future.
The year we lost the kids 2:32pm on 23 Dec 2008 This blog post is in the same strain as you have been developing over some time; the necessity to dig deeper and understand problems in society, particularly children. You are not moralizing, not ranting and not reacting in ill-considered outbursts.

This attitude of calm and rationality marks you out in the media but also develops an opportunity that I'm not sure you've considered.

Do you realise that these very qualitites mean you are an extraordinarily attractive voice for the youth you report on. I'm not "disaffected", but am a young person. There is a real joy in being able to listen to a reporter who does not start from a premise of "all young people are monsters"/"we need to return to good old discipline"/"you can't go out at night"/"kids worked harder in my day".

I'm not really in the habit of New Year's resolutions, but if you were to have one, I'd propose that you bring your cool and positive message to children as well as adults.

Merry Christmas, and many thanks for this blog throughout 2008.

I've seen many typos on stories and not been able to report it.

You are reading into my post ideas that I did not express.

First, I should not presume to understand why people post. No; and neither do I. Yet, it is quite clear that many comments fail to engage with Mr Hartman's analysis and that they are overwhelmingly negative about the Obama victory. Consequently, for me to suggest that such posts owe much to a sense of disappointment seems to me to me to be both reasonable and evidence-based.

Second, you accuse me of pointing to/inventing “’embittered’ people who don’t like Obama’s election ‘because he is black’”. Sadly, I did not say this. I regret using the word ‘bitter’ with its campaign connotations. However, I do not say (and do not think) that people are bitter because of his colour. I think people are bitter that their candidate lost and this disappointment (perfectly reasonable and acceptable) prevents them being proud (which you should be) at the election of a black man. Basically – ‘see beyond your disappointment, at least as far as the skin colour’!

I thought both candidates were excellent politicians who engaged in an election that did enormous credit to America.

Despite the problems you reference #6, I am unable to understand any cogent justification for not celebrating the election of a black man.

Can Obama bring peace to the Middle East? 02:29am on 22 Nov 2008 The key argument in favour of this plan is in no. 6 - more cards in play. This is very important and special and clever way to think about the issues. Everyone needs a compromise; everyone needs to be able leave wtih some positive news for their home land. With more issues on the table, there are more opportunities for this compromise.

There's something unimaginable about Iran/Israel, Syria/Lebanon, Hamas or Hezbollah/anyone sitting down together, but it sounds a wonderful idea.
