Revisiting the assisted suicide debate 4:39pm on 23 Sep 2009 If someone is feeling 'under pressure' to kill themselves, then at the moment there is nothing to stop them either. Most elderly people have enough prescription drugs in their house to lay waste to several regiments.
Nay sayers go on and on about 'God-given life' and yet time and time again we are happy to use all the medical interventions we can in order to defy disease, ill-health and death - perhaps in spite of 'Gods will'. I'm not advocating that people with a septic tooth should be allowed to die. But people with pain or a quality of life that is unacceptable to them should be allowed that one last modicum of control.

Loads of chances for both teams. It's a bit of a shame it didn't end in a draw because neither side really deserved to lose, but I'm glad that it was Michael Owen that got the winner. Everyone only thinks of his injuries - and forgets he's one of England's best natural goal scorers going when fit.
Starting gun fired on leadership contest 12:00pm on 03 Jun 2009 I find it mind-bogglingly pompous of these people that they might actually think we want ANY of them in positions of power after the next election.
First cheques, now jobs 5:04pm on 15 May 2009 They just don't seem to 'get it', do they? Some of us are fortunate enough to get expenses from our firms for expenses incurred in when we carry out our job. That does not include the costs of getting from our home to our work (I'm talking from the London home to the PoW, not from the Highlands and Islands to London), our meals at home (£400 a month for food, per person. We spend £130 per week for a family of 4 out of my salary - so heaven knows what an MP eats at home!), I don't have subsidised food at work, so that's a pain too - sandwich lunch for me!
I'm not even going to get into the cinema systems, the moats or the home refurbishments. Have they ever heard of a white goods package? They seem to have got so used to charging everything, and having their wage as spending money, that no-one has bothered to query whether their expense claim was right - just that they were allowed it, so they'll have it, thank you very much. Meanwhile the rest of us worry about how we pay for the petrol!
Fixing the Have Your Say fault (2) 10:40pm on 11 May 2009 If every comment, email, phone message, text message etc is being examined nowadays, perhaps they're just held up in the infinitely long queue of never endings texts from teenagers that say things like 'kk' or 'wot' or LMAO etc.
Taking life or taking liberties? 10:55am on 08 May 2009 All medical people know that there are ways to kill yourself that will involve pain and suffering and ways which will not. If a Dr wants to end their life, they can do so, quickly and painlessly. If one of my relatives had decided that they really wanted to take their own life, personally I would prefer that they did not suffer - and for that reason alone, this man should be allowed to hold his talks. Not many people will go to hear him. And yes, I think you CAN be in your right mind and want to kill yourself BUT the question you need to ask is if the 'problem you can't deal with, like debt or guilt, were not there, would suicide still be what you want to do with your life. If the answer to that question is no, then we must be able to help the person deal with the problem, and not focus on suicide as a solution. Same with pain. If the pain wasn't there, would you still want to kill yourself? NO? Then let's deal with pain. There are some people who cannot be relieved of pain because of medical complications, and others with metabolic diseases whose outcome I would not wish on my worst enemy, and these people should absolutely have the right to end their lives in a time, place and in a manner of their choosing. But for most others, there should be options.
Trust in strangers 7:16pm on 25 Feb 2009 I used to live in the Highlands of Scotland and again, many people did not lock house doors and sometimes even their car doors. In fact, this trust was prized - and there were specific laws that gave it a high prominence, so that if you broke into a house or a car and breached that trust, you were dealt with more severely than if you, say, shoplifted.
THE MUSIC OF BEING HUMAN: GILBERT FUN 5:15pm on 21 Feb 2009 I really enjoyed hearing the 80's music again. For all the teasing the 80's takes, there were some really original artists and sounds around then. Really, really enjoyed this episode, and Alex Price was brilliant. I was very sorry to see him go.
In the Loop 09:38am on 16 Feb 2009 I haven't seen the series but it sounds interesting. I hope they'll repeat it before the film comes out.
