Personally apart from his calling out of Calzaghe (which he knew was the only way to get him in the ring) i don't see any reason to him. Not only he is one of the most iron-willed and bolt hard fighters we've produced in recent years, the guy actually does have a personality to speak of.

Articulate and interesting yes, but he's also one of the most quick-witted and brightest athletes around across any sport. We bemoan this 'lack of personality' in modern sport and here's a guy who not only has it in spades, but he can back it all up where it counts as well. And he guarantees entertainment.

That said, I've got a horrible feeling that this Dirrell is going to produce something special on Saturday night. He really is phenomenally fast, and even though he's displayed vulnerability in the past, he's always been expected to win and has looked a little complacent at times.

With a raucous, hostile fight crowd to silence (8,000 packed in to the Ice stadium for a 2am start!!) and Froch tearing after him, he'll be anything but that on Saturday. I really hope Froch does it, but even if he does, the chances are he'll not get the credit
he deserves.

One poster above said, Khan, Hatton, Calzaghe had history. Well everyone has to start somewhere. The mainstream didn't know Hatton before Tzyhu or Calzaghe before Eubank. And Froch has arguably already done more than Khan in the pro-ranks.

I was in the states about 10 years ago and managed to make it to the Lewis-Holyfield fight, and i remember the fall out from that decision was front page news across several newspapers. I still have a copy of one, with "two hurt in New York mugging!" probably my favourite headline.

Although i didn't think the decision as awful as some, and i wasn't that far from the ring (same block as Paul Weller!) the stink in the media certainly made an impact and quite likely caused a few casual fans to wonder what the point was. And that was to unify the heavyweights for the first time in ages as i remember.

I have been to Vegas Ben (not for a fight) and i know what sports books are (I work for one!) and i must admit i didn't know boxing had fallen that far down the pecking order over there, i thought it was in better shape than you say.

I think the quality and quantity of fighters operating now is fairly good, if not comparable to the great eras of previous generations. The main problem, as an earlier poster said, is the lack of exposure today's fighters receive.

re Mayweather & Pacquiao, as someone who covers a British site i can understand why you'd look at how a British audience might perceive the two fighters, but i wouldn't have thought there's much doubt that stateside - and indeed globally given Pacman's status in the Filipines and beyond - both are now two of the highest profile names across the world of sport & entertainment, and this despite Mayweather being inactive for nigh on 2 years. In this respect it's probably their victories over Oscar de la Hoya that account for their much wider appeal.
Boxing needs a Bolt 12:07pm on 16 Sep 2009 I don't know Ben, I think you're clutching at straws a little bit trying to draw a comparison with Bolt's impact on Athletics with what any potential emerging superstar might do for boxing.

I don't necessarily think it's fair to say that Mayweather isn't that man because Bob Arum said so in the sun. And even if he's not, most people not interested in boxing probably now know who Manny Pacuiao is by now. Captaincarrantuohil (fine moniker by the way) pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Whilst Mayweather - Pacqiuao could make for a classic, there's every chance that one or both of them will get beat in their upcoming fights against Marquez & Cotto respectively. Surely here we have two examples of the best fighting the best although it was entirely predicatable that someone would surface trying to knock the sport citing the rise of MMA as an example/reason for boxing's "decline".

It would also perhaps have been appropriate on a boxing blog to include a mention of Darren Sutherland.

What bothers me more is Floyd "one of a kind and i'll shock your mind" Mayweather Snr trying to pass himself off as some sort of rapper when he's basically just copying Big Bank Hank on Rappers Delight.

Riquelme - one of a dying breed 11:04am on 06 Oct 2008 Yeah, Riquelme reminds me very much of Juan Carlos Valeron, one of my favourite ever players.

The Deportivo side which he bossed along side Mauro Silva with Fran, Diego Tristan and Roy Makaay surrounding him was, at its best, one of the purest footballing sides i can remember seeing.

With Valeron at the heart of it, their 4-0 demolition of a peak AC Milan in the Champions League (having lost the first leg 4-1) was one of the finest displays I've ever seen.

Has the same lackadaisical body language - and extraordinairy ability - as Riquelme, and let's hope we haven't seen the last of either player.
