I agree with you that the difference lies in the fact that potentially Ronaldo would be exceptional for both the team and the league.

Again, here you have a once-very good player who is into his early thirties, signing for a huge club who are being seen to take a "punt" on them, potentially for a short period of time. Equally, Beckham is being seen as a bit of a cash cow, as his marketing pull is still virtually unrivalled. In both cases, there is no guarantee that the player will turn out to be anything other than a flop from a playing perspective, but earn a few quid off the back of it.

AC Milan are viewed as being commercially astute; this article almost paints Corinthians' plans in a sympathetic light.

In my view it should be viewed the same as the Beckham loan; good money-making exercise from which the club may get a decent player, almost as a bonus. Good luck to them, no need to feel sorry.

I bet if you check the archives of the BBC from about 12 months ago you will see a similar blog from someone at the BBC about how Ramos will have looked at his squad and seen enough to give him encouragement that the fundamentals are there, but just needs some additions in January (central defence to cover for the unreliable King, dodgy 'keeper etc).

Liverpool send out title message 10:16am on 27 Oct 2008 Classic over-reaction to a very average game of football.

Liverpool beat an under-strength Chelsea side by scoring a goal owed almost entirely to luck and then did what they have always been able to do - hung on for dear life by defending in numbers.

They did the same againts Man Utd (an own goal and a mis-hit shot from a cross by Babel).

Let's keep things in perspective; Liverpool are still well behind Chelsea & United in terms of quality of first team, depth of squad and manager competence.

Liverpool may fall short in title tilt 1:40pm on 14 Aug 2008 I thought it was widely acknowledged that Benitez has a formation he wishes to play - and that is the 4-2-3-1 with two holding midfielders (Masc and Barry ideally), one pinnacle of the attached (Torres) and three attacking midfielders. Gerrard obviously was the central of those three last season.

Is it not fairly obvious the Keane will go into where Gerrard was last season, and presumably Gerrard will be tucked wide (right). Benitez made it clear years ago that he didn't trust/rate Gerrard down the centre.

Having said that, I think also the point of Keane being signed is to add fluidity of movement to the forward line at the likely expense of the more regimented Kuyt. Expect to see Gerrard and Keane swapping positions a lot.
Open sores 5:09pm on 21 Jul 2008 The Pattison selection is just a mystery to everyone but the England selectors.

Why in the world would you select a 29 year old who has hardly even proved himself at county level? He only agreed to play for England because he knew that the Green Baggies would never consider him. At least when Andrew Symonds (Brummy by birth, for those that don't know) was offered the chance to play for England he stuck with his principals and chose to continue to plug at getting Aussie recognition.

And equally, if you're going to bring in someone that is a little out of "left field", make them different to the rest of the attack! Tallish, 80-odd MPH, swings and seams it a bit, where have I heard of other bowlers like that...?
