I see what you're getting at with why goalkeepers mistakes and why strikers mistakes aren't treated equally, but consider this.

The score is 0-0, a striker misses an easy tap in, the score stays 0-0. The team gets a point (or in the knock-outs...carries onto extra time and the chance to win).

If a keeper makes a mistake and lets in a goal at 0-0, his team goes 1-0 down, they lose the game and go out the tournament (or collect no points).

This is why a goalkeeping mistake and a strikers mistake are not viewed equally, yes, perhaps in a fair world they should be, but the world isn't fair and a goalkeeping mistake is much more detrimental to the team than a mistake by the striker.

Improving football for kids 1:40pm on 26 Feb 2009 Gavin, I agree with you that the jump from small pitches to a full size pitch is too much at 11 a side. Like you, I played (and still play) as a keeper when I younger, and getting goal kicks out the box was a nightmare!

However, I think that 9 a side matches upto under 14 on a half size pitch may be a bit much. When I was 14, I and some of the lads on my team had our growth spurts and were over 6 foot! On the other hand, some were still only about 5 foot tall, so it's obviously going to be difficult to cater for all players in this age group.

My team had a number of pitches, I think our under 14 pitch was about 3/4 the size of a full pitch and we played 11 a side matches on that. Maybe a 9 a side game on a 3/4 pitch might be better, there a fewer numbers so you are likely to see more of the ball, but the pitch isn't too small.

Punching someone in rugby isn't likely to affect the course of the game. Diving is deliberately attempting to change the result. You don't see much diving in a player's own half. As such, you can't retrospectively punish diving very easily (see my post above, number 97).

Here, here!!!! I consider football a man's sport and like to get stuck in. When I'm fouled I don't winge about it. When I get the ball smacked into my solar-plexus, I take a second or two to steady myself, but then try and carry on with the game.

But there's one lad I play against with work, long shorts past his knees, long sleeved top and gloves, trying all these fancy tricks that never come off, and throws himself at the floor when ever anyone gets within 10 yards of him. Incredibly frustrating!!
