Britain lands key EU foreign policy post 5:48pm on 20 Nov 2009 I have no idea whether or not she'll be effective in the job or not, because I don't know anything about her and wasn't invited to vote either way even if I did.
And that's a bad thing. But we're in the Union and that isn't going to change in the near future, so surely it's better that we try and change what we don't like from within? Rather than look on, jeering, making rude gestures, waving little flags and mooning at Europe with our Union Jack underwear (which is all that most of the disillusioned posters here seem to do), perhaps after forty years it's time to become involved, take an assertive role and take a role in getting rid of all the corruption and inertia that every nation in Europe sees and hates?

Call me radical, but perhaps we could try to build a better Europe? One that is seen as a real competitor rather than just a customer by the USA, China and India. Demonstrate to them that the joke is over.

Of course, to do that we'd have to commit to a long game and put X-Factor politics to one side for a while. I suggest that's not totally impossible.

I'm sure I'm not her worst enemy, but speaking as a rational liberal and a sometimes Labour sympathiser I have to say that the possibility of her gaining real power is one of the main reasons I can't vote for them.
