There's not much that can be done when shareholders are determined to throw vast sums of their own money at an incompetent elite.

But when the bill for that incompetence is laid at my door, as taxpayer then I have every right to expect the incompetent elite to foot some of the bill too.

I earn less than 20,000 a year, which has to support a family of two adults and three children. It's already a daily struggle. Why should I face decades of massive tax hikes to sort out the shambles made by this man, while he luxuriates on 650,000 a year, tax free?

I'm still waiting for any political party or leader to suggest an alternative to the corrupt and corrupting political/economic structures of the last two decades. We've been ripped off. I hope they soon stop talking about "restoring" the system (at the taxpayers expense), and start talking about REPLACING it.

"Cometh the hour, cometh the (wo)man." But not just yet, it seems.
Lloyds and HBOS humbled 9:48pm on 13 Feb 2009 Nationalise - and then mutualise - any failed/failing bank. The building societies haven't bankrupted themselves, or the country. Let's expand that model.

Free Trade is never "free". Our children will still be paying for the costs, fiscal and environmental, of the mess this "Free" trade has made for us

We should re-name it "Long Term Debt Trade".

And yes - I'm happy to pay a bit more, and have a bit less choice, if we can have a more equitable, stable and sustainable economy.

It's about not having a tantrum just because you can't have everything on demand whenever you want it.

It's called being a grown up.
Total and the Wimbledon effect 08:28am on 03 Feb 2009 Another example of the mis-match between the global scale of the economic forces at play, and the (in comparison) parochial scope of national governments.

They are elected by a nations, to represent the interest of that nation, and have for the most part only nation-state level tools they can use to direct the course of events.

But when asked by their electorates to act in their nations interests thay say "Can't!" because it would upset the global economic forces - forces which have been proved lately to be laws unto themselves, serving the interests of a tiny minority, the mega rich.

So unless we want to continue in this powerless, disenfarnchised state, - we must either we create a global entity which has a democratic mandate to control the global economy, or we downsize the economies to the level that matches the democratic mandate.

Both have their positives and negatives. But, the evironmental movement has for years been pointing out that for all sorts of reasons we should be moving to a more localised level of production.

It seems globalisation is dangerously unstable (look at he chaos now around us) anti-democratic (look at the protests against a government who claims its hands are tied) and environmentaly destructive.

So my vote is for a little less free trade, and a little more democracy please. And I'll learn to live with more higher prices for aubergines and chinese plastic tat.

BTW, this whole process is a text book example of how large organisations

a) make a decision
b) make a dumbshow of "consultion"
c) carry on with the decision already made.

It's really very, very cynical. I'm diasappointed, but not suprised.
