I should add as well that it's slightly depressing to see that our forwards seemed more capable of catching kicks than our backs. And also that the only person who's shown a real ability to check the defence, draw a man and create an overlap was not any of our backs but Lewis Moody in the lead up to our try.

I've just rewatched it a few times and I can safely say that it should have been (and probably would have been) scored by every other winger in the Guinness Premiership. There is absolutely no excuse not to have made the corner flag. He simply isn't quick enough. Even Tom Croft starts the run 10 metres behind and is less by the time Cueto's tackled. I know Croft is fast but he's not 'international winger' fast. He was tackled by Agulla who plays for Hindú Club in Argentina. Not exactly a hotbed of world-class players. I don't think Cueto is a bad player but that should have been a try.

Tom - Borthwick certainly needs to go. He won't, but he should. Wouldn't be right to change him in the middle of Autumn Tests. 6 Nations should see someone else step in. Not sure about Moody in terms of his leadership as he's never really mentioned by colleagues but he's certainly one of the few players getting plaudits at the moment. I'd be tempted by Hartley or Haskell I think. Revitalisation through youth. They are playing well and are likely to be playing for next 8 years or so. Haskell can be moved around the backrow to accomodate differences in strategy and no one else is likely to challenge Hartley for at least the next 2-3 years. Captaincy has calmed his fire somewhat at Saints too.

But for a dodgy TMO decision, he may well have been right about the RWC Tom!

Shot to pieces 1:54pm on 22 Jul 2009 Tom - no sweat. Ran through a mock point-scoring calculation for you earlier. 4000 is more than achievable.

With regards to things you can do from home for the shot, you need to decide whether it's worth doing the 'shift' technique at all. I'll have a look during the session at some point. If you decide you do want to then you can practice the drill of jumping backwards from start position to end position, concentrating on getting the feet in the right place.

Beyond that... press ups!!

Firstly, women throw 'only' 4kg shots so not worth the comparison.

Secondly, most international Decathletes in this country throw somewhere between 12m-15m so anywhere approaching 10m is very good, especially with a slightly smaller frame than the average 6'2/85kg.

Agreed. I understand of course altitude acclimatisation is different.

However, the point of that training is that it increases the number of red blood cells and therefore the bodies ability to process oxygen into energy. Much like 'blood doping' of the 80's. So if the Boks were well off match fitness at sea-level they will struggle even more at altitude with only a week to prepare.

As far as I'm aware, you can't develop a 'propensity' to altitude extertion if you don't already have a high level of fitness (something they seemed short of at sea level last week).
Dizzying heights 11:58am on 25 Jun 2009 I'm still amazed that everyone seems to think that the Lions will suffer more than the Boks.

Effort at altitude is only made more difficult due to less oxygen in the air (as stated above). And our ability to convert what little oxygen available is down solely to fitness.

As I remember it was the Boks who were struggling heavily in the last 20 mins of the match, this despite their raft of changes for fresh legs too.

If we fall apart in the last 20 minutes it won't have anything to do with our fitness.

Nothing against your training Gavin, I've done plenty of it in my time, but considering athletics is an 'amateur' sport it's amazing how 'professional' the training is!

2) Ironically, your comments are actually the most soporific collection of pixels that my computer has had the apologetic displeasure of having to display.

Dirsy - I should have known by the very fetching hooded fleece that you wore almost every day of your (very good) Rugby World Cup blog that it was sex appeal that was foremost in your mind.
