Is Hazel Blears she also responsible for the awful, awaful, awful banjo version of the now grating Upshares, Downshares strand?
It was only ever clever for a little while, now it's irritating.It feels like everyone is trying so hard to keep it going.

Thank you to the coaches for believing in attacking footall instead of playing the percentage game and leaving behind an attitude of don't lose at all costs.

Thank you to the players, ( well most of them , anyway) for the skill, athleticism and dedication that created the spectacle.

Thank God the best team by a million miles won and to the losers, a thank you for their dignity in defeat.

Best moments? Any match involving Turkey after 88 minutes.
Let football be the winner 5:41pm on 25 Jun 2008 Whatever the whatever is, I as a neutral really , really don't want to have to watch a 90 minute German procession in a non-match because of Turkey's injury and susupensions and maybe a gulf in class.

I've seen these hopelessly one-sided games before where one team has gone a round too far.
One thing they aren't is a spectacle.

I so hope I am proved completely wrong.
Germany the big winners in last act drama 1:21pm on 21 Jun 2008 Time after time after time, teams who do well in the group stages get found out when it comes to the real tournament of knockout.

Croatia and Portugal so far. I would not be surprised at all if the Netherlands joined them in the graveyard.

Did anyone elase become bored with the fawning praise heaped on Portugal? Why? they had nothing to deserve it, excpet beating teams who weren't very good in the first place.

What really got to the Portugese was the fact that England weren't there to beat on penalties. As a result (draw after 120 minutes)they were clueless as to what to do!!

The final will be between those kings of obduracy, Germany and Italy. It's always the flipping same when Italy start badly.

Germany v Turkey, with all due respect, is a no-contest that I've seen so often in comps before - when one team has gone a game too far above their station in football's heirarchy

Unless, of course, Uefa reduces the match to two minutes duration.
"Why is everyone so bloody miserable?" 5:40pm on 20 Jun 2008 The great 19th century philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer hit the nail on the head on this subject.
He posited that human beings are trapped in a cycle of striving, achieving and then boredom which means we look for something to achieve which keeps it all going on and on and on.

In this cycle, we are, he observes, destined to be forever unhappy.

Schopenhauer himself is generally acknowledged to be the patron saint of the utterly miserable and pessimistic.

He was acknowledged to be a miserable so and so who generally disliked the company of other people, preferring his dog.

As for the old chestnut of people being happier in the past, that was the tyranny of deference not happiness.
I don't think I'd be happy in a feudal system or as someone torn from the countryside and thrown into a factory in the industrial revolution.
Education it seems set us free to experience the cycle that Schopenhauer identified above.

Italy will provide Spain's real test 11:04am on 18 Jun 2008 Winning tournaments is a mixture of skill and luck - that is, being more lucky than unlucky after everything evens itself out.

Italy enjoyed the luck last night: the Ribery injury and the sending off. The Italian lucky train is picking up speed as it pulls out of the station,( as usual).

Spain flatter to deceive. I agree with the comment that they seemed somewhat clueless against a mediocre Sweden team who stuck to their task .

Who would you put your money on in a backs against the wall situation in a tournament environment ?

Step forward and take a bow, Italy.

I'll join the merry band who haven't missed England - at all.
One thing though, whose idea was it to have Steve McClaren as an "expert" summariser on 5 Live? Or does it just irritate me?
