I will tell you exactly why everyone of the UK nations do not produce creative flair players on mass. Go down to a park anywhere on a Saturday or Sunday and watch what happens. To many coaches at youth level (as soon as it becomes competitive, under 13s in Scotland) want the bigger, faster players, because it gives results on a short term timescale. The more gifted, smaller or slower player, is not given the opportunity by the majority of coaches at this level and quickly stop playing football.

One stat for you. In the progression between primary and secondary school in Scotland, (12 – 13 year old), 70% of kids who played organised football at primary school, stop playing at secondary. This is the problem. Bad coaches, teaching bad habbits and bad methods at a young age. In Scotland, it is changing, but these things take a generation to change.

I had a discussion in a pub with a guy who hated the idea of 7 a side football for under 13s. Says it stops players development? In a study done by stirling university, in an under 13s game 11 a side, the left back got three touches of the ball in 45 minutes. In a 7 a side game, he got over 45 touches of the ball in same time frame. Tell me which is going to help the player develop? He harked back to a time 30-40 years ago in Scotland when we did produce a lot of good players. Why? Because as tim says, street football. The kids do not do this now (and have not for the last 10-15 years) and this is why Scotland is struggling.

What you find, is people criticise the various football associations when they don’t know any better. The real reason we don’t produce enough players in the UK, is the a lot of the coaching at youth level is rubbish, and I say this, as a coach of an under 12s team, who sees a lot of football at youth level and am horrified by it.

Tho in general you can be correct to criticise journalists, as they are a very hypocritical bunch, I don’t fell Tim justifies it here.

If you read the article properly, you will see what Tim is talking, is Diego commenting about how they were good up until the first goal and maybe shape wise the first half. However he changes it at half time, but then says we were good till this point, with the team set as it was.

I don’t read criticism from TV, it is, if you think a system is working you tinker round the edges, if it is not working you change the system. SAF and Jose Mourinho do it correctly and that is why they are among the best managers in the world. Maradona is still learning and whether he takes this on board and adapts is what will decide whether he makes it as a coach or not. Tho as others as said, he is actually working with quite a hard squad and on this viewing, they will not make an impact at all, if they qualify, in South Africa next year.

but if you drop hussey, firstly who would you play and secondly how does the battting line up work? I guess you are thinking of moving Clarke up to 4, but who then bats at 5? Watson or North, I am not really sure about that. Only 4 proper batsman for a test???

I think they made a mistake in not bringing Hodge as cover for the batters, if one gets injured they are in trouble and likewise if poor form continues for someone like Hussey. To bring another all-rounder in Macdonald who will not play, unless he is the pizza boy, over another batsman seems a little short-sighted.

If you play Hauritz, you are prob only going in with 3 quicks, or drop North for Watson and I am not sure about the viability of either of these options. Maybe you think differently, but the Aussies need to take wickets and previous to the away test in SA (where they played 4 quick bowlers), they played 3 quicks and could not take 20 wickets for love nor money. I doubt they will want to go back to this.
Australia in a spin? 11:42am on 29 Jun 2009 I really dont see Hauritz having a massive role to play in ashes. He may well play in Cardiff, if the pitch really is going to be useless for the quicks, but remember it is not the track that Glamorgan got fined for, but an adjacent one, so really it could do anything. All this talk about it being a spinners track, is just that, talk, and based upon one game on a different pitch.

Once they move away, I can see the aussies playing 4 quicks with Marcus North and Michael Clark providing the spin option to tie an end and give the quicks enough rest. Why would you play a spinner if he is not good enough and on current evidence Hauritz is not. The Saffers get away without a top quality spinner a lot of the time.

It would seem to me to be a big waste of a bowling spot to play Hauritz, I guess if Watson is fit, he might play as the all-rounder as part of 5 man attack and North droping out, but personally I would go for 4 top quality quick bowlers and part-time spin, than a spinner who gets carted around.

Wattie-boy, I assume (tho maybe wrong) that you are not Australian, because I dont know one Australian who would advocate playing Cameron white, he is even more of a waste of space than Hauritz. If you are going for a player who does a bit of both, North or Watson are much, much better options.

He has been tried and found seriously wanting against international standard bowling. I am surprised somewhat that he has made a T20 century, his foot movement is poor and (in the recent past) variety of shots has been non-existent. Did he not open the ODI batting in India and scratched around for 20 odds at .75 strike rate and got out most of the time. Maybe he is developing his game (coughs) but more likely he scored a century against a very poor county attack. You need people who can hit gaps and over the top to open and batting in ODIs and cook does neither against good bowlers and imagine him and strauss opening (laughs)
No instant impact from Hauritz 11:05am on 26 Jun 2009 I think North will end up as the aussies main spinner this series and as the saffers show time and again, a team without a good spinner is not necessarily lost.

Four pace bowlers, Johnson, siddle, clark and one of Hilfenhaus, lee or Watson, along with North and if necessary Clark and Katich bowling some overs. There main threat will come from the pace attack.

There is no point in playing a spinner just because you feel you have to. If he is not up for it (and it does not look like Hauritz is) Krejza was a flash in the pan, one test wonder. Since then he has been carted about the few times he has played.

Still somewhat surprised by the selection of Macdonald, really thought they would bring some batting cover in Hodge, hope he is keeping match fit somewhere and Macdonald does not look like getting anywhere near the team.

He or she is a WUM, end-of, the best cure for them is to ignore them and not respond to the comments made.

Think the balance of the team is just about right. Pity Euan Murray got injured as I think he would have played and Hines was a bit silly, but you get that with him.

Vickery was very poor and could easily have been replaced after 20 mins, Monye had two guilt edge chances and took neither, at this level that is inexcusable. SW has done nowhere near enough to get at the test team (please remember that there was debate about whether he would make it at all) which Fitz as the only real option.

Did not think Lee Mears was up to much and Rees had a good game when he came on, prob worth a start but the harshest change out of the 4 enforced. Byrne will be a miss for the lions, was never really given a chance with the ball last week and it kind of feels like it would come.

Not overly convinces about the hacks focus on the weight of the pack seemingly being more important than anything else. More weight on its own will change nothing, the scrum simply has to be better. Also not sure about whether it will be that much better. Yes the lions scrum was better when Jones came on last week, but this was also when the boks were 26 7 up and were taking off their best players. They will not do that again quickly and anyone looking for a quick fix will likely be disappointed. The line out also has to be a lot better.

Slightly surprised that no-one has mentioned (on this article that I could see anyway) OConnells position. Yes he is the captain, but as England have shown to their cost, you should not pick a captain and then the team, but a team then the captain. I am not sure there should be a tour captain, why not pick on each match, with the players selected. Would also make it easier to drop a player who is not performing. Would be happier with Jones and Shaw in the line-out, but guess this is very unlikely to happen.

You say it as though the banks who were lending, then went looking for loans (borrowing) to cover their liability (generally other parts of the business) and did not get it due to the money markets drying up. This is no correct as the banks had been borrowing (and building up debt) for years, their plan was that their lending would provide the money to cover this. They believed and for a long time it worked, that the money coming in was enough to cover what needed to go out. When people began defaulting on their loans in ever increasing numbers, the banks did then not have the money to pay their considerable liabilities elsewhere (debt to other banks in the main).

It has quite a similarity to the owners of Liverpool (who I support), who have taken out massive debt to first buy the club then, improve the squad and build a new stadium. They were of the opinion that the money coming in would be enough to cover this, but this proved not to be the case.

Where have you been for the last 18 months? Living in an underground bunker? The global financial crisis was caused, in the main, by companies (in this case banks (of various types investment etc etc)) running up massive debts and thinking they could service them. Suddenly the rug is pulled out from beneath the market (mostly caused by bad housing debt in the US sending smaller companies under and the wave continuing on).

No one saw this coming (despite what that idiot on sky news tries to say) and the very same could happen with football (has actually happened in a few cases (leeds a while back, West ham, Portsmouth, Southampton to name but a few).

This is what Platini has an issue with and to say that There is nothing wrong with debt, nor the size of the debt is very short sighted.

Interesting read as ever, I have a couple of questions from what you have said:

1) why do you feel the Argentinean teams have struggled this year in the Libertadores? Is it just a cyclical thing with River, Boca, San Lorenzo etc playing poorly domestically this year, or is it a sign of changing times in Argentina?

2) who do you feel will win this years Libertadores and do you feel they will have enough to take on either Man u or Barca in the World Club Championship next year (obviously difficult to judge if as usual players leave next winter), or will whoever wins have to play the containing game we have seen from recent winners and hit on the counter-attack?
