Lions ratings: third Test 6:13pm on 04 Jul 2009 Real quality performance and one that will give us all the boost we wanted for four years time. I just hope that the Rugby powers will heed Geech's advise and give the coaching team a bit more time in four years. This is the most important thing in Rugby for me, as I'm sure it is for the majority of British and Irish Rugby fans, and as much as this was year was great for me (Ireland fan), I have enjoyed this more than anything else. We gotta give ourselves the best chance we can. However now its all over, to my Scottish, English and Welsh friends, the rivalry is on again from September. I look forward to sharing these memories in four years. Bring on Aus!!
Lions must heed breakdown lesson 11:06am on 08 Jun 2009 Have to say that I think 6 will be the hardest decision for the coaches atm. Croft does have terrific pace and is very good at the lineout but Ferris has shown himself to be a really physical 6 with some new found pace, something I had no idea he even had. Think Williams is burning himself everytime he goes on to the pitch, but Monye is not a complete test winger. Would like to see Fitzgerald get a run out on the wing. Kearney may also be an option particularly if the Boks go for Morne Steyn, a kicking fly half, at 10 as his skills under the high ball are at least the equal of Byrne. Hook won't start at 10, will either be Jones or O'gara, most likely Jones for me because of his partnership with Philips, the nailed on 9, for Wales. Backline, bar the 2nd wing place, is sown up for me as roberts and O'driscoll are nailed on and Bowe has been the best player on tour so far for me. Byrne is nailed on too. Sheridan is not mobile enough for the test team and will become a midweek player. Jenkins and Murray will start at prop, Vickery will be on the bench because he can cover both sides. AWJ will start beside O'Connell, who will start despite all the rubbish spoken above. then its either Williams or Wallace + Heaslip. I worry if we go for an all irish backrow because i'm not sure that Ireland could cope with the Bokke back row so why would that be any diff in a Lions shirt. However Powell is the most overrated player on tour. People talk about his physicality, however all i saw on Sat was him running down 10 and 12 and not breaking the gain line. Would be very disappointed if he made the test squad.

Byrne allows Lions to focus on positives 12:03pm on 31 May 2009 For me the people bigging up Powell must be watching a diff player to the one I have seen since last autumn. Was poor in the 6 nations and not a first teamer for Cardiff. Says a lot for me.
Byrne allows Lions to focus on positives 10:39pm on 30 May 2009 I think the Lions players may have slightly underestimated the challenge they were going to face today. I think this may in the end be the kick up the backside that they needed. Also I don't think the backrow had any big ball carriers which caused a problem. Williams is a pincher, Worsley a tackler and Wallace is more speed than braun which is a great asset but needs a big lump alongside him to be really effective. Heaslip, Ferris and Croft may provide better go forward ball if not as much potential to disrupt at the breakdown. I don't think we can underestimate how important it was simply to win today either. A defeat to this team would have been a serious dent to confidence but salvaging that victory may help in the building of that much valued team spirit
Joker in the Lions pack 11:32pm on 02 May 2009 I think you are slightly over-reacting to one game. Munster were poor today, but realistically that is the exception, not the rule. Quinlan's eye gouge(??) was poor no doubt and if he gets a ban then it is deserved. However why not give Leinster credit for their performance. Fitzgerald must have really put his hand up as he was very dangerous everytime he touched the ball, and of course got the all important second try. O'Driscoll, Darcy and Elsom were top quality. Nacewa as well had a terrific game. Leinster played very well today, that is the big story
Joker in the Lions pack 7:44pm on 30 Apr 2009 Quinlan is a quality player. Croft is also a quality player. Each have qualities which the other doesn't. But this for me is the reason that Stephen Ferris will start in the tests barring injury. Isn't quite as good as Quinlan at the breakdown, but is young to be as good as one of the masters of the dark arts. Neither does he have the searing pace that Croft possesses. But his game is completely solid throughout. Decent pace if not Croft/Wallace-esque. Good at the break down. Is an absolute beast of a man, for me the most imposing physically of the three. Good carrier with decent hands. But probably his best skills are his defensive ones. Smashes people in tackles, often well behind the gain line. You have to say if the Lions go with Ferris, Wallace and Williams they have a good combination of all skills as Ferris' defensive work will compliment the other two very nicely.
Naughty England fail to learn lessons 2:18pm on 01 Mar 2009 I would just like to praise the performance of Steven Ferris for Ireland yesterday. So many big tackles,fantastic ruck and lineout work and show some nice offloading as well. Must be pushing for a Lions Squad place now as he continues to improve for Ireland and for me is the most impressive number 6 so far in the competition
Faldo kicks off silly season 2:07pm on 02 Sep 2008 See the problem with your argument Lutone is that you haven't researched it. Clarke only played in one major this year and fair enough he didn't play brill but then nor did Poulter. Poulter had the opportunity of all the year's major tournaments to qualify for either list but still failed. He could have even gone to Gleneagles and done so but then again why would you if you know your in the team anyway. Clarke has a far better record than Poulter in his career and was running into form. I'm afraid if you actually watched your golf you might find out you are in fact full of crap
Poulter's chance to reward captain's faith 01:07am on 01 Sep 2008 The world's top ranked players play in the states because they get the most money from the tournaments there. The courses played on the European Tour are generally a much greater all round test that those played in the US which are generally grip it and rip it courses leaving putting as the deciding factor week after week. Granted the greens this week at Gleneagles were not up to standard but that is why there has been so much made of it...because they are normally very high quality.

Also, how can you be shown to improve if you haven't won on the US tour. Casey is a good case for this. He hasn't won this year anywhere and he has played in both Europe and the States. Yet over the past few years, when he was playing mainly on the European tour, he won many tournaments, including the World Matchplay which includes all the best players who can bother themselves to play. Therefore how are you justifying this improvement?
