Talking tax cuts 12:33pm on 10 Nov 2008 Cutting VAT wouldn't prove anything. All cuts in VAT would be soaked up by supplier/producer price rises and Joe Public would gain not one jot.

Choice 12:51pm on 01 Jul 2008 There is little doubt in anyone's mind that the concept of the NHS is unrivalled. The dedication of the staff under so much pressure from the less than competent bureaucrats is nothing short of a miracle. However, I fear we are missing an important point here. Competence in government is being increasingly measured by the parties' attitudes to the NHS thereby making it a touchstone, the holy grail of power or how to attain it.
The issue I respectfully raise is that in its present form, WE CANNOT AFFORD IT!
When the economy's health is based upon confidence in the housing market (fickle at best), the measure of performance changes with the wind (RPI, CPI, include mortgage interest or not...), planning for a leviathan like the NHS is impossible.
I can see the only way forward is statutory medical insurance. And don't anyone say 'we have it already in National Insurance' you are deluding yourself. It is like saying VED is raised for road repairs!
The sooner the politicians wake up to this issue and front it properly, we might then get something sorted.

Problem of inflation 11:57am on 17 Jun 2008 I fear that GB and AD are unable to reduce fuel duty by any significant amount because the coffers are empty.
Any such reduction must be by borrowing more a la the 'solution' to the 10p tax fiasco.
Prospects for Wednesday, 11 June, 2008 12:52pm on 11 Jun 2008 Given all the exitement over a 42 day detention period, I think it would be interesting to put all this into an historical context under the heading of "The Politics of Fear" covering how governments have spun the whole subject of terrorism and invasion since the Norman Conquest.

There have been a good number of examples!
