Dubai: Wholly avoidable crisis 5:20pm on 30 Nov 2009 The real concern is whether the shake out will take down the club med group. What price two tier EU or the Greeks being forced out by their own citizenry when the inevitable austerity measures are FORCED upon them.
Bulgaria and the other Balkan states where the Greeks are heavily exposed could be the final straw.

Nothing will happen to the big boys in the banks, the minions WILL be adversely effected.

The vast majority of bank employees were not guilty, true.
But the vast majority do not get paid over £30,000 either.

As for pay. Why not publish? Most ranks of the public service have payscales/ranges. Look them up in Whitakers.

And let's face it most banks in the UK are directly or indirectly totally dependent on public support. Even HSBC, Barclays et al. See where they would be if the others were allowed to go to the wall. Pay secrecy is mostly to stop equal pay for equal work/performance.
Lloyds: Mind the GAPS 4:59pm on 20 Sep 2009 Make all pay over £30,000 pa in toxic assets at the current MTM on the Balance sheet. Do this until all the assets are allocated. Publish all pay over £30,000 for all individuals.
This will identify a price and provide an incentive for these hard pressed bankers.
Value too low and it hits the balance sheet stopping further high risk activity. Value too high and it hits them where they least like it. Between the pockets.

All directors of all these banks should be barred for life from further board appointments. It is not as though any of them could not survive without the pay is it?

Any replacements could hardly be worse, a name-sign that said "I vote no" would have been far more effective and much much better value for money.

Scrap all bonuses in the UK banks. Directors and executives of banks found to be paying bonuses should face fines and imprisonment.

If that means the so called, best bankers (ie biggest gamblers) go elsewhere so be it. The vast majority would stay in the UK; don't believe the line they would all leave. If bonus free banking is the only game in town where do they go?
Can we afford the carriers? 8:15pm on 30 Jun 2009 I thought carriers needed a substantial battle group as support:
destroyers, submarines, frigates AMS cruisers etc
Surely we no longer have enough of a navy to supply this support. Or are we going to commission a completely new navy? I suspect we cannot support both simultaneously.

TSR2 would have been a considerable aircraft even now.

Good old Labour screwed that one too.
