Nicest people in sport - My Top 20 11:51am on 18 Nov 2009 So pleased Peter Beardsley is in this list. Considering his footballing pedigree, he is so unassuming and has time for all of his fans (and there are still lots around begging autographs and photos).
At a schools training session, he coached the kids, moved goalposts around so they could play a match and must be THE most talented ballboy I have ever seen. Top Man!

Can't understand why people who don't like these blogs carry on reading them though, does having a "sense of humour by-pass" affect common sense too?
It's now or never 2:13pm on 11 May 2009 Great blog again, Robbo,even though I'm on the opposite side of the fence.

Could I just say, though, that not all Newcastle fans are like the mindless ijits that get trotted out by the media every time yet another crisis rocks the club, or a new manager is appointed (every other week).
We are not all deluded into thinking we have a divine right to be in the Premiership, or that we should be an automatic top four club just because we have a good fan base.

The vast majority just want to see exciting attacking football from a team that wants to play for the love of the game and not just to increase their already inflated bank accounts.

Multi-skilling's the name of the game 4:28pm on 27 Mar 2009 As a Toon Fan my team are frequently mentioned in Robbo's blog, and it's rarely complimentary. I take it all in the same vein that it's meant (I hope) as banter. Anyone who takes any of these blogs seriously has missed the point completely. Lighten up, find a sense of humour and use it!

Football's last-chance saloon 2:11pm on 18 Feb 2009 The problem with football is that it's a game based entirely on opinion. As a poster has already stated, 3 scouts can look at the same player, 2 will like him, one will think he's no good.

At such a young age, rejection can be devastating, particularly when it spells the end of a dream that's been nurtured for years.

My son at 11 years old, lives for football, he began by drop kicking a football at 11 months old. The example we hold up for him is that of Peter Beardsley. Rejected by Man U, he was picked up from Vancouver Whitecaps by Newcastle United and went on to become one of the best players in the league. England colleague Gary Lineker apparently said that Beardsley was the player he most enjoyed playing alongside.

If these trials can give these lads one last chance to live their dream then it can only be a good thing. Who knows, if another Beardsley could be found.......
The names you always look out for 10:44am on 07 Oct 2008 I wonder how many other footballers have kids playing in mini soccer, Robbie Elliott's son plays for a local boys team, and I wonder if they feel any pressure to do well just because their dad is famous.
Both my sons play and watching them train and play matches is great fun, even when they lose, because all the kids try their best. The only problems I have seen have been caused by "over-enthusiastic" parents, or coaches who get a little too competitive.
As far as I'm concerned, lower league and grass roots football is the true game, without the highly paid prima donnas in the EPL trying to outdive each other. This is the football that most football fans can identify with.
