Unfinished business in Dubai 06:55am on 18 Nov 2009 It's surely not just me that sees something completely artificial and fake about Dubai as a whole - its golf courses, tennis tournaments, football and cricket aspirations, grand prix motor racing circuit, and everything else that it's bought - essentially hijacked - with its billions and billions of oil money.
Pyramid would be positive step for SFL 08:59am on 15 Nov 2009 Good stuff, the pyramid plan. I remember having a train journey down south earlier this year, and with four or five hours to burn I managed to put together a couple of pyramid systems with relative ease. Just the SFL, other senior SFA (Highland/East/South leagues), and juniors (perhaps contentious, but certainly the way to go after allowing them into the Scottish Cup), gives you a good-sized system that runs to between 7 and 9 tiers (depending on how many teams you put in each league). It would be much better for all those smaller clubs with ambition.
Sports socks - three pairs for a pound! 08:55am on 15 Nov 2009 I think it'll be a cold day in hell before we see anyone dropping their admission prices - it's an absolute pipedream despite the current financial climate. I've watched my team (Motherwell) steadily increase prices steadily up to £20 and now simply can't afford to go to the game.

This is despite the fact that it works. Remembers Rangers v Celtic reserves in 1997, the game that you could get in for £5? 37,000 turned up as I recall.

It took Ben Dirs just four minutes to pour scorn on the match, "not so great from England" within ten, "a load of old rubbish" on 28 minutes, "appalling first half of rugby" on 39 minutes, "worse than a pessimist's wildest dreams" early in the second half, contiuing with comments like "dinosaur stuff from Martin Johnson's side" and "just thinking about tomorrow's newspaper headlines is making me cringe". Eventually, he sums it up as a "dreadful game of rugby".

Reality check here, people. You beat Argentina. That very dangerous Argentinian side that went so well at the World Cup. A win is a win. Look for some positives and stop being so undeniably negative.

The media's talking you all up like you're the second coming, and when it comes crashing down, they'll jump on your backs. It's sickening and it's repetitive.

The fallout from Setanta's collapse 9:01pm on 23 Jun 2009 As much as I would love to see the BBC snap up these rights, I can understand fully why they wouldn't - they can't afford to, put simply, "thanks to the unique way the BBC is funded" (to quote Jeremy Clarkson). It would take some justifying to splash out millions more on football after the cost of bringing F1 back.

The truth is that only Sky have been in the position to own and exploit these rights in the first place. Setanta tried too hard too fast and got burnt. ESPN are not big enough in the UK to leap into this market and expect to be on Sky's level.

16. andie99uk: The BBC does not show a HD feed of Formula One because Formula One Management (FOM) does not provide one. The BBC, like all broadcasters with an FOM contract, is duty bound to take its feed, and can't just turn up with its own cameras... no more than Channel 5 can.
Secrets of the fixture computer 11:09am on 15 Jun 2009 Very interesting stuff and intriguing. I always wondered why, when you can set up a basic algorithm to give you almost perfect home-then-away fixtures for any even number of teams, that we landed up with the vastly mixed and confusing schedule that we do. Now I know! Thanks!
