England get luck of the draw 8:54pm on 04 Dec 2009 It's a great group, but the luck runs out in the knock-out stages, we should get through the second round easily enough but the Quarters will do for us once again, there's just too much quality and we're really not that good a team. Our only hope is that we go there as organised as Greece did when they won the European Championship.
The wait goes on for Strachan and Cooper 12:35pm on 30 Nov 2009 It'll be interesting to see how Peterborough do too, Mark Cooper is a highly rated young manager but is this a job too soon for him? Were Peterborough right to bring him in? Personally, I still don't agree with the decision to sack Darren Ferguson, especially considering where the Posh were 2 years ago. He should have been given the whole season to try keep them up, and then a decision should be made ie: Will he get us back up again, and will he build a squad to keep us up this time? Again, I would have kept him in charge. Yes, this season would be a write-off, but it's a learning curve for club as well as manager. Just by being in the Championship Peterborough are punching above their weight.
Woods craves control and privacy as much as trophies 1:38pm on 28 Nov 2009 I must make the comment that this is a relatively minor traffic incident, anything more serious would have been public knowledge far sooner than this story actually did (around 14 hours after the event, by my reckoning). This was because the FHP did not feel it necessary to reveal the incident until the media asked. In my view, the rest of whatever may happen in the inquiry into what happened should stay behind closed doors, and privacy respected. Our culture of celebrity obsession has led the world to where it is now, a world where a young woman dying of cancer has obituaries printed and issued for retail before she's even died. Where rolling news has become obsessed with "breaking news", so much so that it will push a story out onto air before there's even a chance to verify sources, or to check authenticity. Tiger only wanted to be famous for playing golf, and initially that was how it went, but as his fame and commercial viability grew, he became more and more in the public eye which was inevitable given his huge sponsorship contracts. Perhaps the way for Tiger to return to relative obscurity would be to retire from golf, as sad as that may sound, and relinquish all his sponsorship commitments. If he really feels as bad as we think about being in the public eye, then that may be his next move.

So I would suggest to the American press, that if they don't want to lose one of their greatest icons, and a true hero to everymen everywhere, then back off and let him have privacy. No more rubbish like the stories that happened last night. When I first heard about the accident, my first thought was, "Oh no, he's really badly hurt and may never play again!" but an hour later it turns out he has nothing more than cuts and bruises. It's a sad indictment of the mass hysteria caused by overexaggerated reporting...and that overexaggeration is because of the competition to be the first to get the big story. Whilst that's always been the case, at least in the past (before 24-hour news and the internet) there was still time to have stories checked and facts corroborated. No journalist seems to care about this any more.
France, not Ferguson's successor, should be Blanc's future 1:59pm on 17 Nov 2009 When Ferguson leaves Manchester United, I think there's only one or two options to take his place. Personally, I would suggest David Moyes, he's a bright young manager who's proved consistently with Everton what he can do (he's had them punching above their weight for years now) and he's got the same mentality as Ferguson. I think he would be the best choice, but otherwise it'd be Msrtin O'Neill. He likes his teams to play in fast, fluid attacking style and would please the fans with that style of play as United fans are used to that. Mourinho would be interesting, but his teams play with the style of a Panzer Attack unit, being difficult to break down and very organised, but not much in the way of entertainment. Whilst he would win many trophies, United fans demand more than that, they demand victory in style. If United could find someone like Arsene Wenger then they would pounce instantly, Wenger's sides have always played attractive attacking football (although lacking in the ability to tackle!).

My first choice will probably always be David Moyes though.
Farewell to a brilliant season - and roll on 2010 8:43pm on 01 Nov 2009 As always, the coverage this weekend has been simply awe-inspiring. There have been points where I've lost the power of speech due to some event or other, but it's always left me with a massive grin on my face. Welcome back to Formula One, BBC. You've done it proud.

As I've said before, the best thing about the BBC coverage this year has been the feeling of inclusion throughout the race weekends. You just don't get that feeling in a studio, and to be able to have someone like EJ who everyone knows in the paddock is fantastic. It's brilliant to see a team that aren't just there for the pay, but are genuinely excited to be there. I remember Jake's exuberance at Monaco weekend, as if he couldn't quite believe he was there...all in all it's been absolutely wonderful. See you all in 5 months!

It's not the taking of drugs I am upset about, its the fact he lied to protect his own image. Had he admitted the offence he would have had a 3-month ban and it would have been the end of it. But now he's tainted the whole of the tennis world because who now will believe the accidental consumption stories?
Crashing the F1 party 8:06pm on 24 Oct 2009 Superb blog Jake, and it's been a super year of coverage of the Formula 1 on the BBC. I especially love the feeling of interaction you get from not having a studio comfort zone, and the fact you could bump into anybody on the grid...memories of the mystery girl appearing halfway through an interview spring to mind!

It's that feeling of unpredictability that gives the BBC coverage the feeling of freshness over the former channel's coverage. It's changed how sport can be covered and made it better. One thing for next year though...I know you like to stick around the British team HQs and that, but it'd be nice to see the focus of next year's coverage be the new teams that are coming into F1, maybe do a season-long feature on the perils of starting an F1 team from scratch.
Changes to BBC Sport on the red button 9:24pm on 23 Oct 2009 Overall it's not too bad, I watch the majority of the sports on my computer anyway where available, and plan to have freesat installed soon...losing one small stream on freeview isn't the worst news in the world :D
Where would Sven exit leave Notts County? 1:00pm on 19 Oct 2009 Out of all the other jobs, I think the Swedish national job is the only one he'd go for nowadays. I haven't a clue what's going on at Notts County but it's fair to say that the takeover has done a bit more harm than good really, I would be incensed if I was a County fan to see my team being splashed all over the media every day, and not for footballing reasons. I think if Sven leaves we could see the Munto Finance group hightail it out of there and leave County to flounder until someone who is actually interested in running a successful football club and not just column inches turns up.
Notts County cannot stay out of the headlines 1:44pm on 13 Oct 2009 I have to say I think County have shot themselves in the foot here. Everyone knows that success does not come overnight, and to sack a manager who's team is currently 5th in a league, with no more than a handful of games played, is disgraceful. Without wanting to sound harsh against County fans, who are the people most likely to be hurt by all of this, I wouldn't want to see County reaching the upper echelons by throwing money at the team. They gambled with Campbell, and look what happened there. Next they're allegedly set to offer a huge contract to Roberto Mancini to take over as manager, but what happens in 2 years' time if they're behind their planned schedule and feel they have to sack him? There goes a big chunk of money that could have been used on ensuring long-term stability at the Lane. I certainly don't see this Munto Finance ownership lasting very long as things are going. I really hope, for the sake of the club and its fans, that County do start to do well, but I'm getting tired of these foreign owners coming in and diluting the leagues with endless cash. I think the FA's fit and proper persons test needs to be a heck of a lot more stringent, with plans for the club taken into consideration.
