As a South African citizen, it's sad to say I don't see my country doing much - not with this coach who prefers to play a 7-2-1 formation. We played very well against Spain twice and Brazil in the Confederations Cup (but still lost due to moments where the class difference told)and have lost every game since. More of a filler team.

That said, I'll be supporting England all the way (thanks to my allegiance to Manchester United). England have as good a chance as anyone to win it, even if the don't get a draw as good like Arsenal's CL draw. England's qualifying group was no easier than the likes of Spain, and besides, you can only beat what's in front of you - which will be the exact same situation here next June. England have a quality squad and on their day, they can beat anyone.

Spain was written off so heavily by everyone before the Euro started ("Perennial under-achiever's") - would they be held in such a high regard now had they lost in the semi's? Still the same Spain squad - they just happened to win it.

Countries like Brazil, Spain etc. are not immune to imploding as we saw with Brazil last World Cup, or just downright having a bad day when they play England. I think this is the most open World Cup in a while and England have as much of a chance as anybody else.

As my 21st birthday is June 24th next year, I think having the World Cup in my backyard is the best birthday gift ever. I'd love nothing more than for England to win it on my home soil!!!

All divers should be punished 12:47pm on 04 Sep 2009 I don't think Uefa or the appropriate country's FA can go giving bucket loads of Red Cards after every matchday because let's face it, 'simulation' is becoming 'reality'.
Here's a simple solution:
After each game, the opposing team is allowed to formally protest an alleged dive if the referee fails to punish it and then the FA or Uefa - depending on what match it was, reviews the complaints and gives the player a yellow card.
If the dive led to a penalty, or a direct freekick which scores, a red card is given else a yellow card is given.

As much as McNulty might try to preserve Liverpool's title credentials, I think they have messed it up by getting 2 defeats so early: Surely there's no way Liverpool would match last season's form, they've already blown it with the defeats (surely they will lose again, it's inevitable) and there's no way they'll do the double over United and Chelsea this season. Liverpool have had their best shot in 20 years, and they could only muster 2nd. It's back to the fight for 4th now.

Aquilani might just be stepping into an already defeated team by the time he gets fit. Then he still has to adapt.

All is right with the world again. :)

Touché. Honest mistake on my part. Forgot to subtract points from United, must be my bias ;)

While I agree that we're obviously weaker than without Ron, I believe the traditional 4 4 2 will benefit the team as a whole and we'll see a few people stepping up. Ofcourse I can only speak hypothetically for now, but if say Owen gets 15 and Rooney gets the 25 he's aiming for, and Berba say 5 more than last season, that has effectively covered both Ronaldo and Tevez's league contributions - based on last season alone albeit.
I believe the new system will allow more goals from midfield, the potential is definately there with our mids to get a few goals, just a matter of converting potential into reality. Players like Nani who were hardly used last season can state their case, judging by sunday, he's got quite a good case to state. Macheda looking to be a great prospect, although on a sub basis. All in all, I see a bright future for us, not just long term but immediate future - but then again, I'm a fan aren't I, if I don't find a bright side, who will.

As for Liverpool, even with Alonso I thought they wouldn't match last season's performance, especially the 12 points from Chelsea and United - and now that he's gone, it will be that much harder. I too think Benitez will be their undoing - who knows, maybe he already undid them last season when he tried to flog Alonso and the consequences will kick in now.

All in all, it's great to be able to look forward to weekend footie again. :)

P.S. Berbatov played much deeper at Man United than at Spurs, hence Fergie's comments that he may have used him incorrectly and will use him further up pitch in the traditional CF position this season.

Well, according to my previous post, Chelsea winning at OT would mean they are still 2nd but 2 points behind no?

But in seriousness, I believe bar important injuries, it's a 2 horse race between Chelsea and United to the wire...With United to win (biased prediction as I'm a Man United fan - but that's the beauty of being a fan right?)

Here's to a good season, I hope Ancelotti is a huge hit and Fergie's new system works like a charm with everybody contributing...
Joe Cole and Hargreaves getting back to full fitness too.
