Why's Gordon smiling? 08:43am on 03 Dec 2009 I think generally Brown had a good day,obviously helped by a very very flat performance by Cameron.I felt that DC had lost confidence,probably after messing up last week with the school question. Also the bigger question for me is that DC was not astute enough(nor his front bench) that Brown had said Spain were in the G20.It beggars belief that both parties do not know who are in G20!!I mean talk about missing the big opportunity.If I was DC I would spend the next week studying facts about the last 12 years performance look at where the front bench were educated and get on the attack. To play this sit and wait game because you believe that Brown will shoot himself is OK if you spot the opportunities, unfortunately Cameron misses them week after week.There is no way he is another Blair.He would have had Brown in wreck on the commons floor by now.Another tip for DC rather than jumpimg up and religously following the line of questions given to him.LISTEN to the answers and understand them,take your time.
Shaun of the Dread 12:00pm on 17 Nov 2009 At the moment for the scots it really doesn't matter who is their manager/coach.As Souness said the quality is not there.As for Dunga he has added a lot of steel to the Brazilians but they look a little predictable.My money is on the Germans.
Is all publicity good publicity? 1:20pm on 21 Oct 2009 Interesting comments from all parts of the political spectrum.My worry is the point where in the political circle the extreme right and left meet.History tells us that at the extreme ends of both philosophies the result is the same.eg,Hitler and Stalin.
My biggest concern is that in many areas of policy the BNP make interesting and valid points eg immigration,crime etc.Thus I view there potential rise as being only 1-2 personnel changes or tempering of policy away from actually presenting a credible alternative to the mainstream parties.Lets not hide from the facts here if they opened there party to all races and implemented a religion based approach(attracting other religious groups and campaigning on religion) rather than race, a united independant England approach (anti SNP/UK approach) and a reduced "Political Correct society" approach they would actually tap into the average working class/middle class voter who rightly or wrongly feels alienated by the mainstream political parties.
So it is better to face them up now and argue a more restrained policy than thier's but answers the fears of all the UK population.
Capello's World Cup contenders 3:08pm on 15 Oct 2009 At this moment in time you can be sure that Capello knows his best 10,his only doubt is probably Heskey or Cole.In terms of squad the guarantees at the moment are Beckham,Milner and Defoe.The reason for this is his comments about Beckham after the Belarus game. He wants people who come on who can pick up the pace and feel of the game instantly.Beckham and Milner have shown that they can do this also Defoe when called upon.Cleverly Capello is not looking for the next best 11 players for his squad he is also looking at who can come into a game for 30 minutes and either hold a position or make an impact.This is why he keeps persisting with Cole as a 30 minute sub I believe he sees him as an impact player rather than a starter.
Relevant letters to be released 10:04pm on 01 Sep 2009 Well are we all nieve surely its obvious.How many UK citizens/prisoners have been released under this agreement? How many other Libyan prisoners have been released under this agreement? Why did Jack Straw change his mind overnight(with little explanation "not in the best interests") to remove the clause asked for again and again by the SNP in thier letters?
Conveniently as soon as the agreement was ratified the Libyans imediately applied for the release and concurred that they had a written confirmation that the appeal would be dropped.
My opinion is that the UK government knew this before ratification.They also knew that the SNP would be in the insideous position of having to have an appeal or release Megrahi.Although my understanding of the process is that after ratification of a UK agreement even if the scottish system refused no doubt the Libyans had the option of an appeal to a higher court.(House of lords?)
Personally this smacks of a NuLab clever strategy.
Honesty: The new battleground 5:39pm on 01 Jul 2009 I dont comment on here but I do read the continual banter and questioning of the BBC correspondent's impartiality.Up until now I have always felt that it was just about balanced.However with the news breaking that Mr Robinson has been granted an audience with the great Broon, primarily to be told that Gordy always tells the truth!! I also have lost faith in this correspondent.I can imagine the panic in Labour HQ after the latest mauling at PMQ and Mandy asking for a "soft" reporter to clarify the "untruths" told or faux pas commited.Thus good old Nick was wheeled in for yet more heartfelt spin from the old manse.
I would hope that our esteemed speaker will also recall the PM to the box tomorrow to clarify to the house those errors he made today as is required under parliamentary rules.
Chancellor in distress 2:48pm on 02 Jun 2009 Why is our esteemed PM (who claimed expenses on a second home whilst living in his grace and favour home)keep bringing up the gentlemens club line? If I remember correctly one of the original election promises in 1997 was to be the restructuring of parliament starting with the house of lords.This would ultimately end up with an elected upper house and a more accountable commons. Perhaps once they arrived in power and realised how they could milk the "club" for thier own and thier family and friends benefit this was conveniently forgotten.
Unfortunately our Gord can do or change very little as along with Davee they were all willing participants and in Nulabour actually enhanced the "club" benefits.
I do have sympathy though.How can you continue to claim the 2nd home allowance on a 1 bedroom flat in haringay yaer after year without putting in more unbelievable and imaginative claims.I mean it must be nearly impossible to spend 22000 a year on it!!

Sorry but you really are totally out of touch with the real world.Do you actually believe that us the taxpayers believe that Mr Martin is the victim of class welfare or a scapegoat? He has only been kept in his position through his stance as the commons "shop steward" by appeasing alll parties.
Also lets not forget that he was a sop appointment by the commons to one Gordon Brown by our then PM. The man has been out of his depth from day 1 and finally the truth is out. He was the man supposed to be upholding the integrity and impartiality of the house of commons.He has absolutely failed on both counts. Never has one of your articles so annoyed me through its bare faced apology to this individual. Let us hope that our next government starts to investigate costs of expenses in all our public bodies to save the 70 billion currently wasted on Quangos,special advisors etc.
First cheques, now jobs 12:52pm on 14 May 2009 What is absolutely amazing still is that the 1 man who held and still holds the position of overseeing this fiasco is still in his job.ie the speaker of the house.There is no doubt that reading between the lines and listening to the defenses put forward by the MP's that none of this was seen to be out of the ordinary. There is a system that they were encouraged to maximise, basically that is there defense. If this is the case then no wonder they are now behind the scenes getting upset as you state Nick.
Perhaps this is why the speaker who was obviously out of his depth from day 1 was tolerated by the house and is now being told to get out. Ie.Thier union rep has failed them.!!!
Honourable no more? 3:44pm on 11 May 2009 Why do we have to wait for a review body.This is simple they are paid a salary to do a job.In addition to this a high % have to work away from thier constituency 3 nights/week.Thus all expenses incurred in working in parliament are paid as per standard civil service rules.ie.Basic hotel and food allowance and first class travel from thier constituency to westminster, all backed up by reciepts,if outside of the inner London catchment area.If inside they recieve the inner London allowance.Whats difficult why do we need another expensive review body and full auditing etc.This is the set of rules that the rest of the population has to follow to stop paying taxes for additional "perks".If the argument is that the salary is not sufficient,which I do have sympathy with, as lets be honest some nondescript climate change manager earns more, then reduce the numbers and increase the salary for the remainder.
No wonder we are in the cXXp financially if we have a government that needs a review to take a basic business decision.
