Young and unemployed 4:40pm on 20 Dec 2008 Why concentrate on the young? Try getting a new job after the age of 45. Almost impossible. Try being a single parent and holding down a job while having to find reliable childcare and then pay for it. Try raising a family and paying a mortgage, then being made redundant.
When a company is hiring, why should the young be given priority over anyone else? They are no more entitled to earn a living than the next person, and sometimes a lot less inclined. That is said from experience of working with several young people who have got themselves a job where I work and then 'don't do Mondays' or have 'got bored' Life isn't all a bed of roses, you can't have everything you want. This can make employers think twice about employing the young, not because they're all the same I now they're not, but because of bad experiences they don't wish to repeat.
"Corrosive of public trust in official statistics" 05:26am on 13 Dec 2008 Personally I'd like to see the statistics on 'knife crime' come from A & E departments, and not from reported crime figures. We would then get to know the real extent of this problem.
The BBC licence free? 08:59am on 27 Nov 2008 It is not the licence fee per sé, but the way in which it is spent that I object to. There is little justification for the number of channels which are run using our money, nor is there much justification for some of the content. For example, why was Bill Turnbull sent, with the accompanying OB unit, to the US for their elections? We had perfectly sufficient for the news broadcasts already there. And why do the BBC need to run so many television & radio channels? I know the encumbent editors and production staff will find ways of justifying their own existences, but at the end of the day they can also be wrong. We could have fewer but far better programmes with a bit of judicial pruning. It's not as if they really have to compete, there is no other organisation anywhere in the world like the BBC, but they seem to have a strong desire to become just like any other media company by lowering standards & quality while boosting the number of programmes. I also agree that the government bias is becoming very obvious. This is not what we expect from the BBC, and is not what we should be getting.
Did Mary Whitehouse have a point? 10:18am on 29 May 2008 I was around when Mary Whitehouse and her good friend Lord Longford were trying to impose their views on the rest of us. I didn't, and I don't now, agree with their stance on sex (any gender). But I do believe, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that the violence we are now seeing in our society has been helped to spread by the irresponsible actions of all types of media. I don't mean ordinary folk rushing out after a violent pc game and killing the first person they come across. I'm talking about people who are already predisposed to violence being given extra lessons in how to inflict pain, I'm talking about lessons in violence from news bulletins and newspaper headlines. I'm talking about stronger censorship on sex than on violence, it's okay to kill someone but not have sex. It has become 'uncool' for the media to advertise people being nice to each other (see Eastenders). Apparently it doesn't get as many ratings as nastiness. In that respect Mary Whitehouse had her finger on the pulse.

So what are the media going to do about it? Nothing, because they think they'll lose subscribers. Well, NEWSFLASH!, there are 65 million people in this country. What are they watching/reading if not your programme/newspaper? Have you got it wrong?
