We have "been together" for hundreds of years. You don't separate overnight with a plan on a fag packet.

The EU may also be another factor in the loosening of the ties within the UK. But it does mean that there should not be a great deal of strife if we all do separate.

If the Scots separate and there is chaos because they don't have the infrastructure they need such as IT systems they will blame the UK. How are you going to work out who is Scottish and who is not? How do you divvy up the armed forces and so on.

I'm not trying to make friends but I am trying to influence people.

Its a real referendum with real implications.

Nobody seems to be taking it seriously. Its Brown and his "Act decisively, think belatedly!" posture.

Police beat up defenceless woman 11:47am on 21 May 2008 You just can't blame them really! There is something so smug, complacent and detached about people who have been in power too long. Last night Hoon was virtually telling us all we never had it so good. You could almost hear the nations teeth grinding.

The trouble is for these great communicators that people know damned well that they do not have it so good. Things are not great and they look likely to get a lot worse unless you are an investment banker or Polish (I like Poles but not 1.6 million instead of the alleged 16000 or so we were told to expect). The 10p debacle says it all.

It always baffles me that people attributed with such great communication skills; people who are "listening" so intently to the public can get so out of synch with everybody.

The amount of money involved with the police was tiny - they were more upset by the cheating.

Who the hell can say we need 42 days and not laugh? Will they show real machismo and six weeks after pushing it through create emergency legislation to double that figure to 84 days.

Do they even know which audience they are playing to these days.

They don't "get it".

Prospects for Tuesday, 20 May, 2008 4:20pm on 20 May 2008 Newsnight my #7 looks likely to be binned. Are you allowed to tell us the broad circumstances that prevents the BBC from reporting (so far as I can see) on the Mosely/MI5 story?

I can't really see a big threat to National Security or rioting in the streets. But I would be concerned if this is yet another Big Brother expansion at the cost of our liberties.

Prospects for Tuesday, 20 May, 2008 3:31pm on 20 May 2008 PS Is Newsnight allowed to indicate on the website why the BBC appears to have not reported on the Mosely MI5 sting? Channel 4 reported it and so I assume there is not a D Notice. I can't see how MI5 could use an injunction as they are saying their officer acted independently. I can see his name would need to be blocked etc but is it not in the public interest that we know what "government" people get up to. For instance suppose there are other scams and people assume that the officers involved are acting on behalf of legitimate authorities. Has Paxo gone soft?
Prospects for Tuesday, 20 May, 2008 2:19pm on 20 May 2008 Michael Crick will I hope be reporting on whose (proverbial) dagger will be most likely to be thrust into Gordon Brown once New Labour have been trashed at Crewe? Come on down Frank Field! Is Harriet positioning herself behind his back? Does the ongoing police inquiry into the funding rule out a grab for power by Hain?

I just cannot believe New Labour are going to face the next general election with a Scottish leader - when the 2010 Scottish independence referendum looks very likely to be lost at this point in time.

I perhaps am missing something in the post-referendum period but wouldn't it make him at best a lame duck and at worst ineligible? Won't he be trying to buy off the Scots at the expense of the rest? Or perhaps he will have MI5 invite Alex Salmond to an orgy or something. He seems quite sensible and so I suspect he would be a no-show! Either way the Beeb won't report it will they as the TV license payers don't need to know? If MI5 were not behind the Mosely sting how come there is no reporting as there could be no impact on the national interest?
