Hedge funds and VW: what a pile up! 1:06pm on 29 Oct 2008 Like my grandfather used to say: Don't spend the money that you don't have!! Anyone who sells something that they borrowed with money that they ALSO borrowed and as a result loses gazillions of dollars along the way should know that it is fair game...
Thanks for the memories, Turkey 12:19pm on 27 Jun 2008 The team of the tournament by far. And a pundit on BBC before the match said "oh, Germany will win something like 4-0"! After the match he says "well, some people were expecting Germany to go past the Turks easily". Yeah, "some people", eh??!! :)

But if it weren't for the fact that the goalie was suspended, Turkey would have been in the finals, and with other players returning most probably lifted the cup. But that's for another day. 2 semi-finals in six years is pretty good..

Great matches.. On to South Africa 2010!!!

Oh, are you talking about the famous Byzantine Empire v. Ottoman Empire match in the 1386 Empires Cup semi-finals? What a match. Unfortunate that the game had to be postponed after angry war-lords starting clubbing each other in the head half-way through the first-half...

Some people in Greece like to pretend that Turks in Western Thrace are not really Turks but just some confused Muslims... Go figure... You just can't explain to those people that they ARE Muslims, but they are also Turks, AND at the same time Greek citizens. None of the above are exclusive of one another.

The more I think about it, the funnier it seems!

I thought this was interesting...

But come on people: Somebody has to see the inherent absurdity in all this!! If Greece can convince them to change their name, good for them. But what the heck is going to happen if they are not convinced?? Is somebody going to put a gun to their head and compel them to change what they call themselves?

I don't know the history there well, but finally citizens of the "country in question" are also human beings and as such have the same right to choose what they call themselves as much as Greeks or French do.

And frankly, I couldn't care less, for example, if any country, region or province in the world also decided to call itself Turkey or Istanbul or Ankara. Somebody above said "Former British Colonies in America" - that was a good one!
Fire 'em, those people next door 4:47pm on 22 Apr 2008 As a Turk, I am utterly fascinated!!! Until recently, I had no idea that this issue was such a big deal.

The funny thing is, it is not one of those good ol' ethnic disputes, of which there are many around the world. This case is really unique in that respect because its only about the name, and not the existence of the country.

But I gotta say, this dispute, by its sheer absurdity, demonstrates the levels of incredulity some people in the Balkans go to.

All I am going to say is this: The United States of AMERICA calls itself AMERICA, even though that name is also the name of an entire continent stretching from Alaska to Argentina. Even Hugo Chavez is not throwing a fit about it and everything seems to be working out fine! :)))
