Why did Bank of England keep shtoom? 8:30pm on 24 Nov 2009 Post 7 I very much doubt them being Scottish was a hindrance with a Scottish PM and a Scottish Chancellor in power.

Had Messrs Brown and Darling let them go to the wall I think we all could have foreseen political armageddon for Labour in Scotland.
Why did Bank of England keep shtoom? 7:45pm on 24 Nov 2009 Post 4 agree with your thoughts re any negligence claims. Equally if I was a Lloyds TSB shareholder, which I wasn't and still aren't by the way, I would be absolutely livid.
No statement as to how much went to RBS and how much to HBOS?
The Lloyds shareholders were sold a massive pup and had they have been aware of the true state of HBOS's books may well have turned the merger down.
Introducing green cuts 2:28pm on 24 Nov 2009 Both the Treasury & MOD have recently, in the last couple of years or so, moved into new, modern buildings built under PFI contracts which should have been built with more efficient materials, have better heating & venitlation, more efficient lighting and many other energy saving attributes compared to the old Whitehall buildings. The same should surely apply to all the new PFI hospitals.

Nick, I'm sure you or a conscientious MP could ask the following question to either one or all of the relevant ministers.

"Has moving Treasury / MOD / Health Service (delete as applicable) staff to newly built PFI funded offices reduced the energy consumption per member of staff? If so by how much?"

My money is on they simply do not know.
The Treasury hedge fund 12:15pm on 09 Nov 2009 Post 140 sadly even selling Wayne Rooney to Real Madrid or Barcelona, come to that, would do little to assist the UK as Man United are owned by the Glazier family who are Americans.

Before the pedants have a go I do know that United is effectively in hock to a group of banks who lent the Galzier's the money in the first place.

It was interesting that the two American's (Messrs Hicks & Gillett) who have a huge loan out secured on Liverpool had to pay a lump sum back to their banks in order to rollover their debts to RBS & Wachovia. I wonder if most of the profits on Chrisiano Ronaldo went on keeping the Glazier's bankers happy?

When will it all end?
Boxed in 09:11am on 06 Nov 2009 Post 38 & 55 I tend to agree with your thoughts. I'm not sure 6.8% is right though.
I fully expect it to be over 4% and maybe up to 5%.
If we add in the following all these will act to push up RPI.
1) The inflationary aspect of QE as more money chases a limited amount of goods.
2) A resurgant household property market (remember it is easier to swing to relatively high growth from a fall) with 5 buyers to every seller if you believe the press today..
3) GBP 1 = EUR 1. This will add 20% to the cost of imports from Europe once people start buying again.
4) The price of crude oil has risen considerably in the past few months and as the effects of the drop in prices from July 2008 to spring this year start to work their way out of the figures this will help push things up.
5) Once we hit spring 2010 the effects of falling mortgage rates from September 08 to March 09 will be out of the system and this won't help keep inflation down anymore.
A nice bit of inflation to reduce government debts and help those with huge credit card debts and mortgages to feel better about themselves.
Stagflation here we come!
Nearing the end of the expenses saga 8:06pm on 05 Nov 2009 Post 155, Exiledscot52 don't feel too bad my typing isn't great either. If it wasn't for the preview button I imagine some of my posts would make no sense at all.

I do see your point about Gordon seeming to find penty of time to not only for the apprentices. He seems to have time to comment on Britain's Got Talent; Susan Boyle; the X Factor and almost anything else reality tv based but no time for running the country properly.

I imagine we all wait his verdict on the break up of Jordan and Peter's marriage and should Cheryl Cole sing live or mime with baited breath!

It seems as if he is desperate to get "down with the kids" and be seen as hip and trendy when in reality he probably has no idea how people in the real world live and is the sort of embarassing uncle who turns up at family parties and bored people to death.

Were you bemoaning the fact that Gordon was having a meeting with a few kids when there was much more for him to do? Or bemoaning the quality of the spell checking and grammatical knowledge of the No. 10 website scribes?
Not out of the woods yet 2:21pm on 05 Nov 2009 WOTW post 14 I don't disagree with the sentiments in the first paragraph of your post.

Messrs Brown & Darling are inveterate gamblers determined to keep shovelling money into the system in a vain hope that it will be all right by election night.

Their only aim seems to be a recovery at any cost before the election to try to bring some hope to Labour MP's and candidates. We are facing financial armageddon and they seem unable or unwilling to face reality.

They continue with the same flawed QE plan in the hope that if they gamble enough it must work yet all the time they dig us all deeper and deeper into a financial hole that will take a generation to solve.
