Would be good to hear something about Klaus - given that he negotiated an opt-out from the Charter of Fundamental Rights to be tagged on to the Croatia accession treaty, do you see the accession as a possible vehicle for Cameron to create his own political 'win' for the Tories on Europe once he's in power? It's an alternative to holding a referendum on Lisbon after the event...

The four stage wins last year were incredible and he's been better this year than last in the Giro. I think he can make it to Paris but I don't think he's quite got the stamina to take the green this year. Give him time, though - he's only 24 and it'll come.

UK nominee's big day 09:31am on 22 Oct 2008 Frankly I found it a little embarrassing that significant chunks of the UK press portrayed Mandelson's return to a second string cabinet post as some sort of promotion from one of the most powerful jobs in Europe.

My unease failed to decrease when I read his replacement's resume. No experience with trade or Europe and only a stint in an 'equality in the workplace' NGO/quango for business experience.
