"Not everyone can do a banker's job (not that you can generalise the job anyways). There are many very smart people working incredibly hard to make the bank substantial profit and these people will leave the second their compensation drops below market. that would be a massive amount of government investment going down the drain."

These very smart people caused a crash in the world economy due to their short sighted gambling.

Who cares whether they leave or how hard they work, they are failures. The value of the RBS investment arm SHOULD drop, massively, as should all the rest. They are parasites and create nothing of value.

Bonuses are a share of profit generated, right?
All things (bailout) considered they've made horrible losses, so no bonus. If the people who are working there were any good then they wouldn't be in this mess. Let them go.

Rightly or wrongly the pound will rally on the international markets and I can move my money abroad before they figure out exactly how labour have papered over an abyss of debt and liability...

You and I don't usually see eye to eye on much but I think you've got it spot on this time.

This global game of shuffling numbers around is not generating wealth in any way. If anything it's parasitic.

Well, it seems to be what you want, but frankly I'm sick of the back and forth between labour and the the conservatives. You'd be as well to support a third party (any third party really) if you feel the same way.

Yes, that's correct all the wealth generated in the modern western (and far-eastern) world is entirely down to colonialism, nothing of value is ever generated in the west since that stopped. Nothing at all.

It boggles the mind how people with such ridiculous ideas can continue to function in society.

Just because we don't have the manufacturing base we did 50 years ago doesn't mean we produce nothing or that the wealth we live on is illusory, nor that capitalism is a sham.

But please, do continue, it's most entertaining.

And as the other poster pointed out - it's irrelevant what you think in the end, all forms of collectivism have proven themselves to be far worse in implementation than any inequality you see here, mostly because the same group of sociopaths get into power in those schemes as do under capitalism. Only when you give them totalitarian states to play with the tend to do things like commit genocide.

And if you think you can impose a collective system on people without an authoritarian, totalitarian state then you're even further off in the clouds.

Me, I'll be voting lib dem as usual, because I like their stance on social liberty. I'm not so keen on their tax policies, but I'd rather them than either the nanny-staters or the "moral" regressive party.

Ah wonderful. It gets to this point eventually in every discussion doesn't it?

You've decided capitalism doesn't work, someone challenges you on what you do believe and all you have to answer with it yet another accusation at either them or those in power for being unimaginative.

Face it, you've got nothing.

And no, it's not obvious that there's a systemic problem with capitalism, given that despite this "crisis" the western capitalist democracies have a higher (and fairer) standard of living than anywhere else in the world.

Why?

Pure spite. I didn't jump in head first and enslave myself to ludicrous amounts of debt for the rest of my natural life. Now through interest rates, taxes and bank subsidies I'm being asked to pay for those that did.

A property tax would also have the effect of keeping the reigns on the housing market, which the citizens, banks and government of this country are obviously too immature to do for themselves.

Yes, of course, it was people like me, that earn well and pump money both into the tax fund and the economy and were prudent about their levels of debt, it was people like me that got us into this mess.

What utter rot.

I'm going somewhere without the debt and with lower taxes, it'll be nice to feel the burden of government lift off my back at least a little.

Well good luck to you all, I'll be emigrating before the election to somewhere that didn't screw up so badly.

One tax I could go for is a property tax. As someone who didn't join in the massive debt-fest of the last decade, fuelled by mass house speculation and a people making off like bandits on each others (and the banks) stupidity and willingness to overvalue houses, I'd like to see nothing better than irresponsible, massively indebted homeowners getting the shaft.

As they will the minute the rates start to go up anyway... it's going to be fun to watch from my place in the sun.
