The end game? 04:18am on 05 Nov 2008 This is the endgame, even if all other states flip McCain, Obama will sweep the West Coast. It is a Fait'e comple. (sorry, bad French). He is now our President.

Please remember, the USA is an amalgume of Fifty semi- autonomous regions. Most of them have something akin to a bipartisan Legistlature and Govenership very simalar to Washington's template. Obama can win the White House, the Democrats can win both the House and the Senate, but there is one fly in the oniment.
The current problem is making sure that the Democrats carry majorities, maybe even big majorities (unlikely) in all the rest of the state Legistlators and Governmanships.
This is how consititional changes are made,
( again, unlikely).
This does though insure that federally mandated legistlation is enacted at state level, literally "boots on the ground".
Ok, he looks like he's arrogant and rubbing it in, but he knows what he's doing. He's trying to neutralize Republican held state legislature into split party, non-effective bodies that won't be a thorn in his side because they don't have veto proof majorities on his mandates. If he cant win the state, he can disable it.

Not to be off topic but here you go
I'm familiar with “the Weather Underground.” I’ve meet former member in Pubs and buffet lines now and them, mostly through Professors and Adjuncts at the University of Michigan, Flint Campus, who knew them in their heyday, mostly due to the Weathermen’s one an only "Convention" here in Flint, Mi. Ironically in the Dort Ballroom of the Mott Foundation Building. Not to patronize but, Dort and Mott, were two of the main founders of General Motors, and still lived in Flint at the time. In modern terms, it would be like having the “Battle of Seattle” at the gates of the William Gates estate.
The Weathermen thought Flint, with it's pre-war II, violent Unionist Labor history, would be a breeding ground for "a Marxist/ Leninist urban proletariat revolution" and gain new members. They were displeased with the lack of a warm reception by the blue color workers, many of whom were WWII, Korean War, and even Vietnam veterans. The majority of the industrial workers were either ultra, orthodox Roman Catholics or equally devote Southern mainstream Protestants or Evangelicals Christians. They all hated them to a man and woman. It was practically the first time they actually all agreed on something.

The city despised them, and saw the Weathermen as worse than Communists, they were Satanic Anarchists. The Convention was a failure, recruitment-wise.

I morn the people that the bombs that the Weathermen Underground killed or harmed. I know it is cold comfort. The thugs were young, stupid, brain-addled and of those, caught, even years later, deserve their sentence.
I have bad debts that lasted longer than a Manslaughter/Homicide Verdict.

Please understand if you can, if you can remember. The Sixties and early Seventies were a terrible, terrible time for most of the American Nation. We had so much to do, and so much to change and atone for, in so short a time, the Cold War, Vietnam, The Civil Rights Movement, The Great Society.
My God, I say, we endure it, then following the shame of Saigon, the Oil Embargo, economic hardship, hostage crisis and any number of other lesser insults to our country. I cannot remember in my life time, Americans being of so low of spirit. It was all pervasive.

So much for obscure history.

That aside, what can be noted was that many of former Students for a Democratic Society, the breading ground of the Weatherman Underground, that later entered mainstream politics, particularly former US Senator and Congressman Thomas Emmet Hayden, who was the recording secretary of the SDS and drafted the "Port Huron Statement", the SDS’s political manifesto. He, among others future politicians, knew members the Weathermen Underground personally, but never ascribed to their violent radical extremism.

Oh, almost forgot, Sen. Hayden married and divorced Jane Fonda, talk about consorting with known terrorists! :)

McCain out of Michigan 02:06am on 06 Oct 2008 I couldn't have agreed more with anything Justin has ever said. I live in Michigan, my cousins lived ten blocks from the Romney Estate.
McCain could have won this state.
Oh, but no, he walked into a UAW Autoworker rally, full of Regan Democrats and said (paraphrasing) "Your Jobs have gone overseas, they're not coming back.(I.e. “Sorry, life sucks, then you die. Deal with it.") That may not been what he said, but that was the impression. I had a brother and two brother in laws there. They'd have spit on his shadow if he walked by.
The reason Flint Michigan spawn the term, "Regan Democrat", is because, unlike Carter, Regan offered "Morning in America". He was positive, he was promising them a new "New Deal". He was, in spirit like them, things will get better, hard work, do your part, be positive! He was a Republican FDR. He said, "believe me, I'll make it better".

Hagel questions Palin's experience 02:22am on 19 Sep 2008 My family has two sides. My mother's side is Unionist Democrat, as hard as nails. My father's family lived six blocks from the Romney estate in Michigan and were Republican since Christ left Chicago. Talk about a dichotomy. They always though, found common ground, especial on foreign policy. There are politicians and Veterans on both sides of my personal fence, so when a Senator like Hagal breaks ranks and questions Palin's credentials on foreign policy, yes, it gets noticed. If McCain wins, and something dire happens, I pray to God she is more a Truman than an Andrew Johnson.
Bank spanked - who weeps? 05:21am on 16 Sep 2008 Incredible, after years of shoveling money into the deregulating, neo-conservative, victory at all cost Republican party, what happens to the big investment banks?
The Bush Administration actually did what they said they would do. Nothing.
What is the point of deregulating if you can't manage yourself correctly? Why should we now step in now that you made a mess of things?
Now, historically, every time we did deregulate the financial sector, we had disasters, like Wall St. Crashes, Saving and Loan bailouts and now the current debacle. Who is to blame? The Republicans for not learning from history or the banks for not being due diligent?
The Palin pregnancy 00:50am on 02 Sep 2008 Tempest in a teapot. What are they going to do? Make Bristol wear a scarlet letter? You know there are Gay and Lesbian Repulicans too? The only thing that sticks out to me is that Repubicans need to rethink their birth control policies if not their abortion policies.

New Orleans has always been a commerical, cultual and libido saftey valve for America. It is as much a child of Europe as it is of America. If it was leveled flat, no doubt about it, we would rebuild it. The people of New Orleans are beautiful, and I pray for them.

Now, the Republicans.

Summer argy-bargy 01:04am on 10 Aug 2008 Every President, elected or unelected, should have his own Redoubt; Roosevelt had East Orange, NJ. Truman had Key West. Heck, Eisenhower made Camp David for anyone. Kennedy had Hainesport; LBJ had the LBJ Ranch in Johnson City, TX. Nixon had San Clemente, Ford had Mackinaw Island, and Carter had Camp David and Plains, Georgia. Regan had the Californian Rancho del Cielo, George H. W. Bush had Kennebunkport, and Clinton used Camp David. George W. Bush has his ranch in Texas. The list goes back even before Theodore Roosevelt.
Keeping a President, even a contender, hold up to Washington or dragging through the campaign gauntlet, is not conducive to anyone’s mental health. You have to give them, their families, their staffs and their families a break sometime. You may call it a test of strength and endurance necessary for the position. I call it having a President and his administration acting like the walking wounded the minute they hit the Oval Office door.
