Spurs show top four style 1:02pm on 29 Nov 2009 I personally don't see mental strength in running the score up. Chelsea beat Wolves 4-0 and could have gone for more but why? Being ruthless is not kicking people when they are unconscious. I've remarked to Arsenal fans that their penchant for 6 and 7s is a sign of insecurity. United ran up 5 in 34 minutes v Wigan. It proves nothing and arguably Wigan at least don't waste energy when the game is dead. At 6-1 after 86 minutes ruthless is to take the ball and play it around saving yourself for the season ahead.

Also Spurs have shown a marked tendency over recent years to prefer under dog status. They beat Liverpool and everyone noted their bench strength compared to even United and Liverpool and yet after going 1 up against United they conceded 9 and 9 points to the rest of the 4.

Last year reflected Spurs lower expectations and then push on. Take Defoe suddenly he's all but on the plane to the world cup and what do we get? Silly sendings off and injuries just as I was about to order the Kool Aid that he was no longer the lightweight striker he had been.

Are they still the team that may have spuriously claimed food poisoning (no one was prosecuted and no evidence emerged) when faced with 1 game to be 4th? Personally the case in unproven. Is Defoe the front runner who prefers no expectation because he scores a lot of cream on top goals? unproven.
Maradona earns World Cup reprieve 12:26pm on 18 Nov 2009 I am not sure Maradona is a good manager (or even merely bad) but if the players will at least play for him that is half the battle and one many cannot claim. Also I think they really lack the players. If they are missing Veron good luck....

His crimes compared to SAF's questioning a referee's ability and fitness to referee were nothing. I guess I have double standards where this great player is concerned just like the FA with S'Alex. Maradona's crime was one of taste and decorum Ferguson's was far worse.

In this country does only the threat of the criminal law stops a manager risking a 4 match touchline ban by beating the referee to death? In many ways Maradona got banned from the game unlike S'Alex who merely gets a better view. I'd say one is lenient one is not even a punishment.
Nutt gets the sack 1:16pm on 31 Oct 2009 Is the issue not that this Govt has taken spending on experts and consultants to ludicrous levels but they are window dressing. They just do what the 'dloids tell them to. They literally wasted billions here on IT and Quangos of compliant cyphers.

All that stuff about Skunk and hard Cannabis turns out it was an invention and not one from science but anecdote.
Nutt gets the sack 10:29pm on 30 Oct 2009 The key point here is not what we feel about Cannabis (albeit people's personal testimonials about people they've known are not particularly helpful). I do not think it's [cannabis] a great lifestyle choice personally but think it's up to individuals to make decisions for themselves. Illegality as we currently have it exacerbates problems and costs fortunes in policing IMO. But what I think is not the issue.

If this was someone in the USA damning science we'd be all uppity about how dumb they were.

So Alan Johnson is on a par with the "intelligent [sic] design" believers for me. He seems to see science advisor as a branch of govt so if he says something the scientist has to prove him correct somehow. Peer review that? Johnson clearly has no idea that science is not like Govt and other things that change their text and policy on whim.

Quite what clown they can drag up who will deny the evidence is beyond me but as Malcolm Tucker said if you disagree with an expert get another one.

What can one expect from an 18 year post man with no stated opinion on a postal strike something one would have thought he'd be better placed to deal with than the science of the damage that drugs do. It seems he has no specialist subject.

Personally I think the Govt are chasing votes here with the big DRUGS scare story they have created over the decades. Many people with no idea or rationality still think that the artificial distinctions between substances into illegal and legal makes any sense or are in some ways decided by something more than happen-stance. Certainly few genuine experts in the field would agree.

Indeed given the number of people driving cars and working on tranquillisers prescribed like sweets, it seems, one could argue the Govt is the biggest supplier of addictive narcotics. They are fine with us taking valium because we complain to a doctor we're a little anxious but not with anything else.

Needless to say as much as I despise the opposition the decision to appoint someone like Smith who appears to have no redeeming features in her cypher personality shows that New Labour stood and stand for nothing under Brown.
Agassi confession lengthens shadow of doubt 8:26pm on 28 Oct 2009 #34 you miss most people's points not so much that Overend is wrong about the consequences for ATP & testing but that his and others levels of sanctimony at Agassi are at fault. In fact had he been banned I doubt it would have hindered his career from then as he would have got a 3 month ban - so what. As we saw with Capriati and others in many walks of life cry a few crocodile tears and say you bitterly regret it and move on - see Dallaglio.

As to your wider point about breaking rules that is surely trite and jobsworthy in other spheres of life? Applied to cycling and athletics yes probably best.

Personally I find it ridiculous that people get 2 year bans now like Hingis for something that is not performance enhancing. Whether one believes I kissed waitress stories or not that story and Agassi's here is plausible. As the drugs involved are likely to harm not help I'd be happy to accept a lie and not ban people for a first offence.

Testing for them just highlights in a macabre way the drugs themselves if anything?
Agassi confession lengthens shadow of doubt 5:39pm on 28 Oct 2009 There are a lot of people who must have lived in a monastery that this is a story even. Many world leaders and soon to be world leaders have indulged in illegal narcotics. Those in the media who still try and make out some shock horror story here are either 80, lived a quiet life, never worked in an office, never went out or are utterly oblivious to what is around them.

Surely the fake hair now that is sad. He faked a mohawk!

Frankly had this come out then it would have been a blip. Now it would be a longer ban but that is the laughability of the WADA code.
Watson ready for next step 1:08pm on 21 Oct 2009 I find it all a bit disturbing this focus on young people who have not yet reached a high level (being a near top junior at 17 is no guarantee of anything). Sure her sponsors should be delighted but it would be best if we waited for real achievement? Let people earn attention and sponsorship. Age level bests are fine but players of her age who have failed to become good even bypass the level she won at.

Also in terms of future prospects I note you totally miss out the most important thing her height. Sure if she was exceptionally gifted but as you point out she is not. She finally won.

Why is the pot always over egged? This kind of desire for: lone assassin: against the world: back to the wall story lines: is for losers or put nicely very occasional winners. If you are good enough the collegiate circuit can still be a stepping stone. All you're actually saying is that she was, and maybe still is, a very marginal prospect and hence not worth an article.

Is this free praise and attention and sponsorship likely to help or hinder development on the evidence of my lifetime the latter on someone who is probably a year or two behind a schedule to the top.
A prize deserved? 04:16am on 10 Oct 2009 This was voted for much earlier (11 days into his term I read?) before he failed to close Guantanamo (hey if he cannot convince his own party in Congress it's not anyone else's fault). Before he clearly realised the USA had no goals in Afghanistan.

I am hopeful for his presidency but I see no way he has extended peace - By realising the Afghan campaign is shorn of goals and meaningful strategy we should expect more. Who is most culpable the idiot who does not know better or the smart one who does but does nothing?

Indeed if he does accept the Biden plan in Afghanistan we have a war with no goals grasping for a saleable strategy to avoid cut and run headlines, very cynical. If he takes Gen Chrystal's PoV then the USA is in Afghanistan purely to liberate the populace a position that is unsustainable surely. Neither position is closer to peacemonger than warmonger so this award is perverse unless he gets out of Afghanistan and risks being a one term President.

I assume Obama 'humbled' was a misquote surely "patronised and humiliated"? Bigotry can come in 2 forms - straight and the patronising inverted sort. I cannot help feel that Mrs Clinton or Al Gore standing on the same platform do not win this award.

It was clearly a down year hence putting up someone who had saved no lives nor achieved anything beyond personal greasy pole climbing. They should have made a proper statement by not awarding a prize this year. That would have stood out and made a statement instead of humiliating the President and opening themselves to ridicule.

Kissinger's award nailed the irony coffin and this award nails the coffin on sarcasm.
England discover ruthless streak 5:00pm on 28 Sep 2009 I have to say it's reflective of bad losers to reduce discussion to 1 decision in a game. Especially a decision that was not that controversial. It was not like an LBW with the ball pitching 6 inches outside leg. Frankly it was a fair amount of gall to ask for a runner and the umpires were correct in their decision - incontrovertibly so?

Increasingly Sport does seem like WWE. Losers reach for obfuscation after losing. Never accept they were 2nd best nor discuss how they came to lose e.g. Chelsea why their side sat back and allowed Barcelona on to them with 10 men last year? Or the British Lions how they blew a 13 point lead?

Why do teams/people prefer to be victims? That surely is the saddest position of all?

Is it child like spite on the winners? To rain on their parade? Weak?
