Reports of my death... 10:41am on 10 Sep 2008 Maggie, I'm disappointed by your article. As already pointed out, the primary reason for the "reports of my death" gag was the untimely publication of a Steve Jobs obituary. Additionally, while I appreciate that people use the term in conversation, there is no such product as the "iTouch". The iPod Touch was refreshed, yes. The iTouch still doesn't exist.
As for the "paid crowd"... have you never seen tech launches before?? This one was muted for an Apple event, certainly nothing unusual about all that cheering. Nor is it just Apple...

Stephen Fry, Apple and the BBC 09:55am on 28 Jul 2008 Guys, I wonder if you put too much thought into this. When I go to news.bbc.co.uk I expect impartial journalism. When I come to a blog, I'm not looking for the same thing. We come here out of interest in the opinions of the BBC's (hopefully) well-informed writers.

Personally, I think of the BBC site as like a newspaper... or at least what a newspaper ought to be if they weren't all so biased. The "news" should be just that; unbiased fact. The blogs are, to me, the opinion columns. I don't always agree with what you write, but that's rather the point.

Of course you have to be careful, but I would use the following yard stick - do you find a story interesting? Then feel free to write about it...
Broadband ads - Virgin rapped 10:32am on 02 Jul 2008 Speaking as a relatively new user of Virgin Media, I think they're doing a lot better than most... Firstly, I agree that their traffic management policy should be made more clear to users, however I think it's one of the more reasonable ones out there. Basically, if you use masses of data in peak hours, they'll temporarily cap your speed to avoid you clogging up the network. There's no penalty (cost-wise) for doing so, and you'll never be cut off, even if you hit the cap every single day. This certainly compares favourably with other ISPs I've used in the past who try to charge you for hitting caps or even apply permanent restrictions to your account!

Also, the "up to" issue is a big one... With VM, I have 10Mb broadband, and I get 10Mb. Within 5% of that at least. This is an awful lot better than ADSL ISPs, whose customers frequently get half the advertised speed or less.

The ASA are right to chase ISPs and force them to be more clear about their advertising, but I think Virgin are one of the best of the bunch really...

-- Ever heard of a little thing called X-Ray? The technology is available, and is used every time you fly somewhere. Sure, it won't tell you if a CD's contents are illegally copied or not, but it will help you at least broadly categorise the contents of a package. That doesn't make it right or acceptable to use it every time you post something however, and the same is true of the Internet.
iPhone tests Twitter limits 11:49am on 09 Jun 2008 clickem, I doubt today's announcements will get BBC One coverage - the only time I recall that happening was with the original iPhone announcement. I think that one of technology's biggest players, the largest seller of music players and music downloads, moving into a new market is significant. Fundamentally, Apple's moves are huge in the technology market, and today's biggest tech story will likely be the WWDC Keynote. Therefore is it wrong for the BBC to report it? I think not. They also report other huge stories such as new releases of Windows, launch of new technologies (MS Surface as just one example) and so on. If BBC One's bulletins announced every upgrade to the iMac's specs or something like that, you'd be right to complain, but with massive tech stories I think the BBC is right to report on them, at least online, no matter what manufacturer is involved.
