What Mercedes buy-out of Brawn could mean 11:13pm on 16 Nov 2009 This is well wide of the mark and is simply a rehash of every other story today. If Heidfeld was going to Brawn it would have been announced today. The fact that it wasn't suggests that it never will.
Benitez's brinkmanship strikes again 1:06pm on 26 Oct 2009 It gives Benitez a stay of execution, but little more. While he gets tatics in these games right, especially against teams that attack Liverpool and where Carragher looks less exposed, he is still able to make some perplexing decisions. Substituting Torres on 80 minutes was daft and you could tell what Torres thought of it. In the big games you need your big players to play 90 minutes, especially when you are only 1-0 up. Trying to play it safe on 80 minutes is a silly thing to do. It was as confusing as substituting Benayoun for Voronin in a game that you are losing and where you have an attacking £11 million player in Ryan Babbel that you never use - and he still complains that he doesn't have any money. You just can't afford that.

It's only a matter of time until Bentitez goes.
Chelsea & Liverpool under scrutiny 00:29am on 02 Oct 2009 I've no clue whatsoever how anyone could tip Liverpool for the title. The writing was on the wall before the season started. Alonso left, he wasn't replaced despite that hoo-hah over Barry, and inferior players have crept into the squad. Liverpool don't even have a starting 11 that's good enough, let alone a squad.

They'll be lucky to stay a top four side when you compare them to Manchester City and Tottenham.
Who is batting for file-sharing proposals? 7:41pm on 25 Aug 2009 For any Minister, and a totally *unelected* one with a very questionable past at that, to take a personal interest in one aspect of government policy and ride roughshod over it is truly astonishing.
Could Ferrari's Finn make a shock return to McLaren? 00:26am on 24 Aug 2009 I don't know where some people get the idea that Raikkonen will leave the sport and where they get these strange impressions of his 'motivation'. Raikkonen has always looked like he has, win or lose. He's still a massive asset to any team and I doubt whether many drivers around could have got third today or any of the other performances he's turned in. The Ferrari isn't fast enough to challenge at the front and there's no guarantee it will be for Alonso next year, should that move work out.

Going to McLaren makes sense. The guys at McLaren always loved and rated him highly and McLaren simply need to better drivers fighting it out that the front. They need the constructors points which they haven't had since Alonso left and it's cost them.

Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis, Linford Christie, Maurice Greene (apparently linked to company producing banned substances), Marion Jones (convicted conclusively), Merlene Ottey (failed but cleared by her own federation)........

The list is endless. Basically, there has been no winning athlete who hasn't either been convicted or where there are endless rumours. I think we'd be extremely naive to ignore all of that when looking at not just one guy, but several guys who are running faster than those people ever did.

Sorry, but the off-season testing is very important and I'm afraid Caribbean countries are less strenuous on that than elsewhere. It continues to be a problem. Testing in competition isn't really where the focus needs to be these days.

QE lives on... 11:59am on 06 Aug 2009 Let's call it what it is please - printing money.

No, it won't work. We're in a situation where banks have quite a lot of bad loans and assets on their books and there simply isn't the money in the financial system to back them up. Governments then need to throw in money to try and back it up in some way. £150 billion will get eaten in no time and nothing will happen until that money ends up needing to be taken out of the economy in the form of higher inflation. There is no evidence whatsoever that anything has improved as a result of printing money.

I really do worry about how this is being portrayed by a lot of 'economists', because we aren't getting the truth.
The shrinking economy 7:14pm on 24 Jul 2009 Anyone who thinks we will get a recovery by next year is nuts. Additionally, printing money (I refuse to call it QE) makes things worse because there are consequences. Once things start moving it becomes a runaway train and that money inevitably has to be 'taken out' of the economy by higher inflation which in turn will mean far higher interest rates. That will then plunge the housing market through the floor again. Goodness knows what will happen to the public finances.

There do seem to be a lot of lunatics around who think that the economy can be stabilised in a few months and we can carry on our merry way. There has been to much stupidity over the past ten years for that, and it's still going on.
