I don't believe it's the BBC's job, as a public broadcaster, to show live sporting events, given the immense cost and limited audience. I would, however, welcome an SPL highlights package to be broadcast across the U.K., after all, the EPL's MOTD is shown up here, too. And conferring an economic advantage on one part of the U.K. is against the terms of your charter, right?

I suppose the WEF is starting to live up to the 'Dowanhill all the way' monicker, and that the Jazz Festival did have ignominy of playing a city that had recently hosted Kenny G (the man is an incompetent antichrist to most serious jazz circles), still, a wee mention of some of our cultural events might go down well in a blog purportedly focused thereupon.

Still, well done Mr. Cummings; a pleasure to see both his acting diversity (from Brecht to the big screen) and his activism rewarded.
Vote early, vote often 3:21pm on 23 Jun 2009 I'm pleased to see fellow Glaswegians agreeing as to the awful, facile, and profoundly anti-intellectual state of Kelvingrove museum. I can see the value in having a children's museum, but we already have the 'Science Centre' on the South side.

Vote rigging from Culture and Sport Glasgow, should these allegations prove true, would not surprise me in the least. This particularly dirty little quango banned 'Variant' magazine - one of Glasgow's few recent and worthwhile cultural endeavours - from distribution at its venues for having the nerve to publish an unflattering article.

Having seen how they've affected the visiting exhibitions at the Burrell Collection, I fear for the the city's heritage. We are fortunate that they have not yet dared meddle with the permanent collection there, but I feel that we may see the Museum of Transport becoming yet another facile play-park when it reopens.

Frankly, it is of the utmost importance that columns like yours continue to broaden the scope of the B.B.C.'s football coverage - otherwise so lamentably fixated with the premiership.

Without the 'little' leagues across the world, the English leagues would lack some 80% of their top players. Yet it is also something of a fallacy to consider world football merely in terms relative to our own back-yards.

German teams, for example, will oft play with five across midfield. Spaniards often go in for two-touch, non-contact games in training, and their largest clubs are owned and run by their fans.

Yet despite the range of different ideas and systems to be seen across even these relatively nearby lands of Europe, B.B.C. Sport remains remarkably heretic, with the notable, and immensely valuable exception of your blog.

To be frank, we could do with equivalents for Asian, Middle Eastern and African football; not to mention Russia and some of the other 'European' leagues.

It is truly refreshing to read well informed prose on this site that doesn't focus on John Terry's new boots (or some other such Premiership-centred twaddle repeated ad-nauseum in the tabloid press) and instead seeks to inform us of something outside our normal footballing scope. Keep up the good work!

As I said, these are allegations, yes. I do not, and did not, allege anything of the sort myself, though I do question quite why these allegations continue.
The Guardian presently has an article on its website detailing these allegations: given this, I do not believe that it constitutes defamation to say that such allegations persist - however I can understand caution in a litigous climate.
And incidentally, I absolutely agree with Baklava about leaving patriotism on the football field: if only Government were to pay heed!
Anyway, enough politics, back to football, and yes, regardless, Bilic certainly seems to be a good coach, and a notable character.

Anyhoo, Do you reckon that it's because of lack of practice together (perhaps due to certain clubs holding their players back from international duty because of "injury") that most of these international teams don't seem able to play the offside trap, and do you think that we might see a more attacking tournament than the last world cup, where we had very few goals-per-game?

Also, would you ever consider taking the Scotland job?
