'Ministers argue, of course, that they do not have to accept advice - however fact-driven. But the view expressed by Dr Campbell echoes those of Dame Ruth Runciman, a former member of the ACMD, in a letter to The Times yesterday:

"Until now, the ACMD's advice has been accepted by governments of both parties despite the challenge to existing policies and practices that it sometimes posed. I think in particular of the Aids and Drug Misuse Reports, which I had the privilege of chairing and which attracted considerable public and press hostility. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher's Government, after some hesitation, took the bold step of accepting the ACMD's recommendations and implementing a wide range of harm reduction initiatives including needle exchanges. As a result, we now have one of the lowest rates in Europe of HIV among drug users."'...

Doesn't sound like she has an issue with Nutt sounds like she has an issue with Ministers ignoring advice.

A return to reason? 11:07am on 12 Nov 2009 jon112uk. these advisers are unpaid and part time, they have full time jobs, in the case of Prof Nutt that is a psychiatrist and neuropsychopharmacologist specialising in the research of drugs which affect the brain and conditions such as addiction, anxiety and sleep. He published his findings to academia, as other 'scientists' do, which he is allowed to do. Resignations happened because they disagreed with johnson. Alan johnson wrote a letter too the Gaurdian regarding david Nutts sacking and it wouldnt surprise me if the leaks originated from the HO. you miss the point.

Nutt row deepens as more scientists quit 09:02am on 11 Nov 2009 If the point of drug policy is too minimise harm to the wider society then it has failed and Prof. Nutt is right too advise ministers and the public as he is suppose to do about the actual dangers of the various drugs. If as a scientist he feels the drug law is failing, as (ex-)head of the ACMD it is his duty to make his feeling known. The information and advice the ACMD give isn't just scientific as MP's keep saying, the ACMD are there too advise on many social harms drugs may cause not just scientific. That is why there isn't just scientists on the board.

The 3 recent heroin prescription trials showed crimes committed by addicts dropped by two thirds. Draconian controls just don't work, and our attempts too control others have proved it.

More could quit, drugs panel tells Johnson 11:58am on 04 Nov 2009 slightlyallthetime is weed legal in Holland or just decriminalised in certain zones. I know they only allow a certain amount of 'cannabis bars' too open in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, so maybe the ones that operate have a monopoly over prices as competition isn't big. Drug policy shouldn't be concerned with prices imo. It should protect society, and our laws are not, drug crime is rife, children are targeted and drug users are being put at risk. The only solution I believe is legalisation, then the monopolies commission could regulate prices.
