England get luck of the draw 12:42pm on 05 Dec 2009 80 sorry but I just get really bored of all the Scots that come on these forums slating England. You know the ones you think that success is when they put on an Algeria shirt and cheer them on to a draw or something. Maybe you guys should focus on qualifying for a major tournament again rather than your aimless noises against England.
Not saying it's all of you but its a lot.

So? You think the English fans and people are represented by these comics?
England fans KNOW we have only won it when the final whistle blows.

In the 3 major tournaments between 02-06 England were the only European nation to reach the 1/4 finals in each.
Losing 2 of these on penalties. And the other to Brazil the winners of 02.

Yes we are more than aware England have a bad penalty shoot-out record thanks. We are more than aware of our failings. We have lived through every moment a hundred times.
I love people that come on here with their 'I will dance gleefully on England's grave' attitude.

Being regularly in the knockout stages and losing on penalties is a darned site nearer than Scotland have ever been. If England has mastered the anti-football of penalties and say had Germany's record at it then we would have at least 1 major tournament to our name by now.

76 no not the best since 66, we drew a semi final in 1990.
You talk about our failings against top 10 teams, but we have wins over Argentina and Germany in finals tournaments this decade, also draws against Portugal.
England get luck of the draw 10:43am on 05 Dec 2009 65 you are quite tedious . People used to smugly play the trembling factor against Spain and I think the just won the European Championship. Despite what you may think I don't think such nerves remain solely an English disease, and they can lay the same ghosts to rest that Spain did - although it pleases you to think that England won't. It would be great to ram it back down your face. Personally I do not like this anti-football method of deciding matches.

It is a good draw for England. A draw which if they do have any chance in the tournament at all allows them to build into it. It is a draw that gives a fair crack of the whip and a chance to maximise chances of staying alive in the tournament. Survival in these tournament, whether by penalties, or luck and finding a way to win is all that counts. Ride your luck and fight when you need to, but also progress smoothly and efficiently when you can too. This is what Italy and Germany have managed so often. So it is a good draw indeed. We do not face opening matche dog fights against the likes of Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Portugal, France, Nigeria, Serbia, Ghana etc teams that are far more likley to cause trouble and take points off you at the start, which in turn increases the pressure and stress and opens cracks for later in the tournament, and thus minimises the chances.
Survive as smoothly as possible, progress as early and safely as possible and always move on is the aim.

And then?
OK there is a chance we could face Germany in the last 16. But I would say it is most likley that they will be the most consistent across 3 fixtures against and between a difficult group D and win that group. So therefore to maximise our own chances we should really focus on winning our group (coming 2nd would mean playing Germany), something we failed to do in WC98 when we lost to Romania and thus faced Argentina in the last 16 and into a dog fight clash. I would always prefer to win the group and take on any team that came 2nd and was not good enough to win their group (even if it was Germnay). Make sure you maximise the chances, win the group and keep surviving, and who knows what happens to your main rivals. They knock each other out or suffer upsets in the rest of the draw and suddenly you are right in the frame. The path is open.
People say a probable last 16 game against Serbia/Ghana/Australia is tough and yes it won't be easy. But I think that is a decent last 16 match up, and you must expect a somewhat difficult game at that point. Take Spain for example if they win their group they are likley to face Portugal/Ivory Coast or even Brazil and I think England would far less want those kind of sides at that point. People then talk of potential 1/4s against France, and I really don't see them as anything to fear at this point and there could be worse 1/4 final opponents such as Brazil as we met in 02.

So as I mentioned a fair draw for England, that gives England a clear way to think positive and to maximise their chances of progressing quietly and going deep IF THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH, and I don't think there is anything to be negative about.

Really wow! You don't say.
Normally the complaint is the English think themselves as world beaters, this time we are not optimistic enough! We can't win!
I still hear the Scottish moaning whenever England mention 66 etc. As if the Scots wouldnt mention it if they had won the WC!
Maybe the Scots should put a bit more effort into themselves rather than poking at the English and seeming silly and narrow.
Then you might qualify.
England coaches join forces to talk tactics 3:32pm on 24 Oct 2009 Why are there few English managers at the top of English sport now? Unlike what some critics of England and the English like to perceive I don't think it is because we have all become useless now. I think it is mainly to do with the popularity and importance of English sport (ok that sounds arrogant but it is true). English sport has the financial clout in football, cricket and rugby that means many of the best players throughout the world want to be here, and this applies to coaches. Many of the great players also want to stay here after playing here so they look to coach here too. It's a big world out there and if you dilute all the best talent into two or so leagues, then the local talent is bound to suffer and their opportunities diluted. It's the price we pay for having the opportunity to see the best talent here every week.
Tangled in the Web 5:36pm on 12 Oct 2009 The fuss people are making over a game being on the internet. Yes I would far prefer England to be on beeb or itv and yes they should be, but once they are not personally, i'd prefer to pay a fiver for the game i am most interested in and be able to choose them individually, rather than have to pay an expensive sky package every month to see those few games. Personally over the long term I find this approach a more inclusive way for people to be able to see the sports and games they most want to see at less of a cost.
It wont suit everyone I know.
Defeat shouldn't mask England's progress 12:04pm on 11 Sep 2009 I love watching the women's game. Well done ladies. I love international tournaments for either men or women - and I'd watch a tournament like that over more of the usual Premier League or Champions League hype and fodder anytime. In the women's game there is lots of skill, fitness and good sporting attitude and deep feeling for representing their country. It's been great to see this England side growing in the last few years. I don't see the point of comparing it to the men's game or criticising either the men or women's game in this comparision.
Yes the English men haven't reached a major final for donkeys but it's different.
As for changing the size of the goals I don't normally see so many goals scored and the games can be entertaining too when there is a bit more chance of a goal. The goals yesterday magnified it because the Germans were so good at finishing and exploiting weakness. One comparision with the men's game that does stand up; those Germans!
How England can win the Ashes 9:51pm on 10 Aug 2009 Cant believe there are still people saying pick x because he will be good one day! Who cares! The Ashes are the priority and we need to win em. Weve lost em far too much!
If Bopara is dropped and discouraged so what! If he is made of anything he will force his way back into the side. Why do people think he should be protected and so sure come good at the Oval? Too late, too many chances. Ok maybe he is not a number 3 , well England should address that in the winter maybe. For now we must drop him and Bell, as they are not delivering. Keep the rest of the team as is. Its not tearing the team apart for the sake of it - its a couple of necessary changes to make the team competitive again, and will give the others more confidence to perform again. A fresh look and impetus for the Oval. Dont keep going in with the same players to make the same failings. The Aussies gave themselves the right pep up by picking Watson and Clark.
Bring in Key and Trott or Ramps and at least try something please!

you miss the point. We've been trying to do the above for ages, trying to play the 'oh it's ok he'll be good in the future card'.
But the tomorrows are here NOW and we have to win NOW. And we won't with flimsy players like Bell and Bopara remaining there and failing. Team spirit will only take you so far. Ability and results are required NOW.

Im not giving up hope. But selection is key!

The Oval has often been a stronghold for England. Sometimes its been our only win in a series (ok when maybe the opposition have taken foot off pedal after winning already) or we have clinched series there.
The Aussies have been getting better and tweaking at the right times to peak - so far - but we have often seen this series teams playing well and then falling back in the next match. Sometimes a fight in defeat or draw has led to something good in the next game. Witness how England came back after fighting in Cardiff on to Lords. The Aussies did well at the end of Edgbaston and Lords and this help them go forward. England did do well with Swann and Broad on the last day at Leeds.

If we get our selection right we can take the initative and bite back hard.
This Aussie team is still quite inexperienced in England and the Oval will be another new test for them and clinching the series should be made as tought as possible and let's see how they cope.
How England can win the Ashes 3:32pm on 10 Aug 2009 Cant believe people are saying keep Bopara and put him at 5 or 4 and let him rebuild his confidence! This is IT guys, THE ASHES, theres no building for tomorrow.
England have been increasingly outplayed with top of batting order pitfiul - and without lower middle order wagging could have been in big trouble at Edgbaston too, weather allowing, as well as of course Cardiff and Headingley.
Drop failures Bell Bopara and Colly (although they wont drop him) and bring in Key, Ramps and Trott. Ok if they fail they fail no more so than the others have already.
Bowling is a concern too with over-reliance on bowlers that the Aussies seem to have worked out unless the pitch is totally in their favour, Onins and Anderson, and I dont think the Oval will be. OK these guys are erratic but Harmison seems to do well at the Oval and seems to take wickets and I would throw Monty back in too. We have to somehow take 20 wickets and these guys could do it. Maybe keep Anderson in if he gets hot and pitch looks suitable. So go with Fred, Harmison (or Anderson), Swann, Monty, Broad.
