This talk about the referee forgetting Caldwell had just been booked and what Carew did is completely beside the point. The fact is Caldwell committed a rash challenge from behind when it was clear to everyone he had very very little chance of getting the ball. Then he tugs at a mans shirt to try and knock him off the ball. Both are yellow card offences and both cards were given. Two yellow cards = red card. What Carew did matters not. He may well have been tugging at the shirt as well and that is the same offence and so under the rules he should have been booked.

However, just because one person does it doesn't mean it's ok for everyone to do it. Carew is labelled as clever because he goaded Caldwell into committing a foul and he did it without the referee seeing. Caldwell was rightly sent off and the game turned on it's head for Scotland.

The same thing with Michael Stewart: if he goes in and commits two bookable offences he can't be surprised if he is booked twice. Some referees will allow a warning, some will let it go, others will follow the rules to the letter and flash the cards. Every referee is different but if you are going to risk committing a foul then you should be able to accept if the referee punishes you for it. Some will some won't, that's part of what makes the game exciting - every game is different.

I agree with Hutton but how has Gordon "proven to be the best player?" He has played more games for Scotland that's true, but when McGregor's played he hasn't looked out of place. He did well against Argentina. People talk about McGregor not having enough experience in the national side but he has MUCH more experience when it comes to European football. Gordon has played 2 CL qualifiers and 2 UC qualifiers if I remember correctly. McGregor showed his quality last season with some superb saves (Werder Bremen??) and has been on form again this season after a poor start.

McGregor deserves to play as he is a quality keeper and is playing well and regularly. Gordon is a quality keeper as well but when it comes down to it McGregor has to just shade it. They're both about equal ability wise.

I agree with #25, Chick comes in for a lot of stick from people every week for writing a personal blog. This week for certain he was spot on it's a disgrace that there should be 6 favoured managers, but then again the entire scottish league structure is a shambles. The SFA need to get their act together and come up with an idea of how to sort this, because having three bodies in a small country is just madness.
Classic bunkum from the blazers 3:16pm on 04 Nov 2008 People seem to make many comments on this using "person 1" or "person 2" as an example of their for or against argument. But the fact is there are different situations which people don't seem to take into account so I will try to list the different people here:

1) Person born in Britain with british parents
2) Person born in Britain with 1 foreign parent
3) Person born in Britain with 2 foreign parents
4) Person born outside Britain with british parent(s)
5) Person born outside Britain with other british relative
6) Person born outside Britain with foreign parents but moved here as a baby
7) Person born outside Britain with foreign parents and moved here as an adult.

Now people comparing Novo to Aiden McGeady, who has an irish gran, or Lennox Lewis, who was born in Britain, is as far as I can see completely wrong as they all fall into different categories. This is something that people don't seem to point out.

This 'gentlemen's agreement' seems strange to me as (after doing some research to confirm) Wales clearly broke this by playing Pat Van Den Hauwe, as pointed out in comment #8. Yet there has been no mention of this anywhere.

The other issue I have is with the "bloodline" thing. A player can have foreign parents and yet be born here and be, quite rightly, considered British. Does that mean if Nacho Novo and (I have no idea of his relationship status but for example) a Spanish girlfriend have a son in Scotland, the son would be considered British? I think that would be the case. Novo jr would be free to play for Scotland despite not having the "bloodline."

In my opinion, Novo should be free to play for Scotland if he applied for a passport as he has lived in Scotland long enough to become a citizen.

Interestingly enough, that could also be the answer to how to decide who he would be eligible to play for. The gentlemens agreement existed to stop Welsh players playing for England, Northern Irish players playing for Scotland etc. and so since Novo has lived in Scotland his whole time here that should decide who he can play for.
First audience figures in for Euro 2008 00:37am on 13 Jun 2008 I don't see how the failure of the home nations to qulify would make anyone think that the ratings wouldn't be high. This is the European Championships, one of the biggest sporting competitions in the world, of course people are going to tune in to watch it. Some of the football on show has been breathtaking and it's only going to get better.

In fact, in a way the failure of the home nations has made the coverage slightly more bearable to watch, as most fans here north of the border will understand...
