The prime minister is safe - for now 09:33am on 09 Jun 2009 What I find astonishing about all this is that I don't think I have heard Gordon Brown make any sort of statement for days. For me, his silence is deafening and Mandelson seems to do all the talking.

He took too long to respond to the MPs' expenses crisis and he apparently has nothing to say for himself on Labour's drubbing in these elections. When is he going to come out and face the electorate (and apologise for causing the BNP to gain representation in the European Parliament)?

I must admit, I haven't checked YouTube lately...

Wikipedia is censored 1:31pm on 08 Dec 2008 I suspect that the public at large either don't care or will just agree with the IWF's assessment and subsequent actions. Very few will analyse the motives or (lack of) thinking behind it.

This is not confined to the internet, but I think people are quite happy to let someone else act as moral (or ethical, social, etc) guardian and take responsibility, without asking too many questions.

And so another bad precedent is set.

Magpie - touting your Tweets 6:01pm on 26 Nov 2008 Personal recommendations can work. Many products thrive and many sales are made precisely because of this: people place a lot of trust in the opinions of friends and family - and you should never underestimate peer pressure.

But this is plain wrong and undermines the service. Anyone who signs up deserves to be blocked, IMHO.

But I don't think that ever took off in a big way.

I have a wide definition of 'spam' - and it's just got wider.

Google, privacy and Street View 12:45pm on 04 Jul 2008 Whilst I have deep concerns about Google's attitude towards privacy and their apparent reluctance to be more open about their policy (apparently, they won't even include a link on their 'iconic' homepage for fear of sullying it), I cannot see the difference between being snapped by Google; a press photographer; a professional photographer, who then exhibits their work; or a holidaymaker, who uploads their snaps to Flickr for all to see.

With the exception of the last group, all of these could be argued to gain commercially from their photographs.

But the scale of the project, the fact that Google is behind it, coupled with the fact that there are more devices than ever, which are able to record more than just a moment in time, but build up a picture of our lives and our movements, mean it is right that this should come under scrutiny and we should not just blindly walk into it.

It should serve as a basis for discussion on privacy matters and what seems like its constant erosion.

He went straight up in my estimation, too, when first I heard the news. Mind you, he slipped somewhat when I learnt that his is a safe seat and he had been critical of the 1998 Human Rights Act.

Still, at least someone is not prepared to let the issue drop and for that he should be applauded.

And whilst many commentators and bloggers may support him, it's depressing to note that opinion polls (Yougov was one cited) are suggesting the public at large are 70% in favour of extending the length of time suspects can be held without charges being brought.

This leaves to ponder the unpalatable truth that, on this issue at least, Gordon Brown may actually be in touch with the public, so ultimately it may be an empty gesture.
