And Scotland will have moved on a further step towards independence.

Getting on with it 2:39pm on 25 Nov 2009 What Scottish Government in its right mind would choose to cut its own block grant or use the power to vary income tax upwards when it has no other income tax powers? This additional "power" is no power at all.

You have to start taking seriously the accusations of poor journalism when even someone as dim as me can see right through the con!

Well, you can judge by them. Not statistically, but more general tone. And I know from being a regular reader and sometime contributor that there has been a sea-change since May 2007. I truly wonder what the next election in 2011 will bring.

All the evidence I see and hear is that this was perceived as an action of a competent and admirable government.

But on a more positive note, wasn't that a brave intervention by the Labour MSP, Malcolm Chisholm?

God, that was a pretty poor programme. Really took the debate forward with that Brian...

So Brown says the Banks were a Scottish problem, Blair says that anyone with a view opposite to him is a nasty separatist, surprisingly the British General is a unionist, and Boris is allowed to get away with cliche after cliche. Well done son.
Devolution poll 1:20pm on 29 Jun 2009 I'm a nationalist and if someone asked me if defence and foreign affairs should be a Westminster responsibility I would agree. It would be plain stupid for a devolved parliament in Edinburgh to have these powers. Can it be any surprise that most people would agree.

However, ask people if an independent Edinburgh parliament should have these powers - like every other independent parliament - then the answer would be quite different.
Not the last word 11:54am on 04 Mar 2009 Labour and the Liberal gut instinct must be that a referendum would deliver a "no" to independence. So why the hesitance for a poll?

Because any vote would see a huge expression in favour of a great deal more power for Parliament.

And that is what they are against.
'Rip it up and start again' 8:41pm on 12 Feb 2009 Iain Gray will live to regret the tearing up of the SNP manifesto. People don't like behaviour of that kind and there will many opportunities for it to be used against him in future.

But most he will suffer from the albatross of his foul attack on independence.

Too many good Scots think that independence for Scotland is an acceptable view to hold, even if they don't hold it themselves. However, few Scots will have missed the incredible irony of a Labour leader claiming - as the UK heads into a "deep recession" - that independence, amongst a litany of other woes, would ruin the economy.

Today was a low point in the history of the Labour Party in Scotland.

Hardly surprising or wrong that the SNP should push the idea that they were looking for a win in Glenrothes but - and this is a big but - how come so many other agreed with their reading of the runes? You included - "Tight but looks like the SNP may have taken the seat."

I think Labour were as surprised as everyone else at the result and their majority.

And, as for the future, I can't imagine that Alex Salmond will be taking the advice - well meant no doubt - from Labour, Tory or LibDem that he should take to wearing sackcloth and ashes...
