Petit was part of the era when Arsenal had a job to finish with 11 on the field and Petit was one of the biggest culprits.

Why do we have to win silverware. I'd sooner watch Arsenal not winning silverware than any of the other PL clubs. Do you like football or do you just like trophies.

So much hype about him when he played in Germany but has never been more than ordinary in an England shirt. He's certainly no better than those in possession at the moment.

Liked FCs comments re man of match, but you have to admit England were not much to watch until Beckham came on.

Commentator kept blethering on about Crouch's goals but once again they were against moderate opposition. Against the top teams he has no idea how to cope.

I know he scored a goal and was playing out of position but surely we have to forget SWP. He just is not international class.
England cannot replace Rooney 12:11pm on 14 Oct 2009 Now I know FC has lost the plot. Crouch should not even be in the squad let alone the team. Not one of his international goals has been scored against top flight countries. If he scores a dozen tonight, what will it prove, just more goals against nonentities.

Against good opposition he is always struggling and loses the team lots of good position by leaning on fouls. Although so tall, he can't reach balls he has to jump for without leaning on a shoulder.

As for Agbonlahor he is like team mate Ashley Young, all flash and no substance. What the hell has he got against Bent. McNulty says that Bent hasn't shown he can produce at this level, when has he had a good chance. Late subs for 10 or 20 minutes are hardly a fair chance to prove your worth.

Although Rooney, in my opinion is a very good player, to say we have no chance without him is nonsense but about par for McNulty. And where does all this rubbish about Gerard being world class come from. Yes, he looks world class when he plays for Liverpool, but he's rarely looked other than ordinary in an England shirt.

Personally I don't think we are in with a shout anyway. A successful qualifying campaign against mostly weak opposition has led to the usual hype but if FC continues ignoring in form players and hanging on to clowns like Crouch, Downing and SWP then we've no chance, with or without Rooney.
New sports, same concerns for Olympic family 6:57pm on 09 Oct 2009 I have long been anto Olympic Games. To me they had completely lost their reason for being and this further firms up my opinion. It has become far to big and expensive to stage.

Most sports have their World and regional championships. This a far better idea being cheaper to stage and giving smaller countries a chance to hold an important event.

The Olympic movement is no more than a gravy train for delegates.
Adebayor madness mars Man City win 5:57pm on 14 Sep 2009 Is there something in the air at Manchester that seems to turn refs into homers. Clattenburg was really superb on Saturday. He managed to position himself so that he cleverly failed to see Barry's handball. Couldn't see Adebeyour's attack on RVP or his elbow into Gallas or the stamp on Cesc or the slap at Song. But was perfectly placed to see Song's go at Adebeyour.

When Arsenal were at United Evra should have been red carded for persistently bad fouls. Against Spurs on Saturday he should have been red carded for a head butt. When Arsenal scored, MU equalised with a penalty for a Rooney dive. When Spurs scored first Pallacios got booked for a Berbatov dive and MU equalised from the free kick.

I know Scoles was a little unfortunate with his second yellow but he has got away with things so often in the past that you couldn't feel sorry for him. As for MU going down to 10, I thought Spurs were playing with 10 from the start. HR has done a job for Spurs but what he sees in Crouch I cannot understand. The only time he was in the game was when he was fouling the opposition. Why someone that tall needs to lean on someone's shoulder to get to a high ball is beyond me.

If this is true why do we continually see Crouch in the squad. I know he has a number of goals but none against the top international sides.

Gary Neville is another. He never was the best man for the job when he was at his best, he's certainly not now.

Last night I heard that Hargreaves could be back when he's fit. I hope not. There's a player who's rep was always better than his England performances.

Goalkeeper would seem to be a problem position. We have 3/4 decent keepers but none are outstanding. I suppose if I had to make a choice it would probably be James who is marginally the best all round, with Green second. Foster seems a little unsure at the moment but will probably emerge as No.1 in a couple of years.

So let's not get carried away. FC has done a great job thus far and we have to hope it will continue. However, he still has the same problem as other managers, in that he still fixates on a player and continues with him when he has proved to all others that he's not up to the job.
All divers should be punished 2:56pm on 04 Sep 2009 One point that seems to be missing amongst all the jubilant anti gunners is that Eduardo has been red carded for a yellow card offence. I do not pretend that Arsenal should have had a penalty and nor do I deny that it looked like a dive. But if a two match ban is appropriate then diving has to become a red card offence.

IF Almunia had done the impossible and snatched his arms away Rooney would still have gone down. Does anyone really think that Mike Dean would have booked him. Rooney was clever. Did a dive but made sure he got a piece of Almunia. That, according to Jamie Redknap on Sky is OK and fair as part of the game.
Strauss's England worthy winners 5:38pm on 24 Aug 2009 Great day for the team/squad and I'm so pleased for Strauss because I've been heartily sick of the negative comments by some. Boycott in particular, as he was the worst captain ever, given that he only ever played for Boycott.

I sincerely hope that there will not be another ridiculous knee jerk from the government with the issuing of MBEs. That was so crass last time. Let's face it they are paid to play cricket why should they get honours for doing what they're a paid to do. I always thought it was a ridiculous action, after all what did they think it would do for the morale of the Aussies. Furthermore, having pinned on the medals, I don't think they won another test for three years.

You can just imagine the Aussies going home thinking Blimey we're so good that people get medals when they beat us.

One thing this series has done is to explode the myth that we desperately need Pietersen. The sooner this is realised by the media the better and perhaps this primping prima donna can discover that he is not indispensable and become a team player.

Regardless of his lack of achievement in the final test I feel that England will miss Flintoff far more than than they would Pietersen. His very presence, much like Botham's used to, seems to make the others play better.

In closing I have to say to Matt Pryor, Well Done. I have been very critical of his abilities in the past but if there was a prize for the most improved player of a series it would surely have to go to him. I saw no reason to play him for his batting because he gave so much away behind the stumps, but in this series his keeping has been just about unblemished and few if any of the other contenders could have done much more.
Stuttering start for Benitez 10:42am on 17 Aug 2009 I'm afraid Benitez rants are becoming more than a little boring. He is fat becoming a laughing stock. His ridiculous rants against other clubs in general and Man U in particular, begin to look like a distinct lack of confidence.

I think they were a possibly little unlucky not to get the one for the Voronin incident but how he could expect one for the handball I don't know.

The ball was kicked straight at the player who's arm was in front of his chest. It was there when the ball was kicked, he didn't move it there and he did not controll it with use of the arm, it quite simply hit him.

I think the acid test is to ask how happy would he have been if one like that was given against him.

The simple ffacts are, that Liverpool were second best for most of the game. The expectations of this club are always higher than is realistic. If not foe Gerard and Alonso they would have struggled to be top four in recent years. Now Alonso is gone and Gerard is becoming a shadow of his former self. Showed little on Sunday and is definitely slowing down. Hype alone, will not carry you through.
Mixed emotions for Capello 10:32am on 13 Aug 2009 I often wonder how it is that a number of quite mediocre players somehow grab the spotlight and media attention and are translated into stars.

A Daily Telegraph writer, for example, was extolling the virtues of Glen Johnson, saying he had made the right back position his own. Last night must surely have exploded that myth. Nearly always out of position, slow to get back from attack, and when in position was out run, out played and and out classed by Babel.

Surely by now it is time that Capello realised that some of our much laided "stars" are not good enough. The hype about Ashley Young is laughable. Just another SWP head down, run like the wind, do nothing at the end of it. These two should both be discarded immediately.

James Milner produced more positives in five minutes than Ashley Young did in a hour.
