Capello's World Cup contenders 6:01pm on 15 Oct 2009 Amazed at the Beckham argument.

He was a great player, and like so many of those has become less effective as he has slowed, but still has those touches of class that can make a real difference at key times.

He is neither the perfect right midfielder that some above would have us believe, nor is he past it and useless as others would have it. The question is, 'should he be in the squad as an alternative to the various other Billy Whizzes down the right'. My view is that he should, simply because when Lennon's style has been thwarted by a smart defence, putting Walcott on changes very little (and vice versa), whereas putting Beckham on changes the angle and style of attack.

As for the other 'controversial' McNulty pick, Michael Owen, I don't think Capello will pick him if he starts every Utd game and scores 40 goals. You will note how a not fully fit Rio was picked for this squad, while Owen was not considered for earlier squads even though he had played 3 or 4 games for the Toon. I think that Owen and Capello did not get on at Madrid and that is all there is to it. Capello is human, and entitled to make decisions for personal reasons without explaining them to us, so long as England are winning. So, much as I would take Owen for his proven ability against the best teams, Capello wont.
The ramifications of the Singapore race fixing verdict 4:22pm on 21 Sep 2009 McLaren should have their fine reimbursed and be re-instated in last years constructors championship. There is no possible justification for the disproportion in the 2 punishments.

As for the tired old complaints about Alonso not being supported at McLaren, it is time to let it go. Nobody knows what went on in the garage it is all speculation. Hamilton is a racer, so is Alonso. Lets hope they both soon have the hardware to be pushing each other at the front of the field.
F1 row nears endgame 2:01pm on 11 Jul 2009 The FIA need to avoid putting in Jean Todt to replace Mosley as he is clearly Mosley's man and will continue this ridiculous brinkmanship. A genuine independant needs to be found with no real connection to FIA, FOM, CVC or FOTA if possible.

And reduce the power of the Stewards after the race has finished. They need to have a limited time to make a final decision after which the race result cannot change, in the manner of other major sports - e.g. in football despite a goal clearly being scored and not given, or being given when not scored, you can't change the result. 20 minutes should be plenty of time.
Becoming the story 4:27pm on 10 Jul 2009 Why wont the political ninnies on this blog stop trying to score pathetic childish points and actually comment on the fact that a newspaper has been illegally hacking into private and confidential phone calls (well voice mail probably).

Coulson is neither here nor there, just a bit embarrassing for the tories with Labour trying to make capital, just like the tories did over McBride. That doesn't matter. A paper illegally spying on people does.

Nobody should be asking for Coulson to be sacked, or complaining about any of the many random Labour names, they should be asking why the Police aren't investigating this so that the guilty ones are arrested and convicted.
Review of the week 11:58am on 10 Jul 2009 Cannot believe that #15 statement that the Michael Owen transfer proves Benitez' point about players being greedy. Owen could have got more money at Hull, Stoke or overseas. My only doubt is how much football he will get with Utd, but presumably he has had some assurances on that. And it will go down much better with Fabio if he is only playing half the games because of squad rotation and not because of injury.

Benitez was right in highlighting greedy footballers, although it was a bit of a hissy fit cos he didn't get Barry to sign, still he shouldn't worry, you don't build teams overnight no matter how much money you have. People forget that Chelsea were already in the top 4 before Abramovich handed over the cheque book...
Feel the Urn! 2:37pm on 09 Jul 2009 Sorry #3 but I cannot agree. By now KP should have learnt that when the ball is a wide outside off stump you don't try to sweep it even if that was what you had planned, and when you are on 69 you should be seeing the ball so well that there is plenty of time to change the shot.

If the game it tight then the extra 60 runs he should have got could prove crucial. I don't say 'drop him' but he needs to be told that he is a plonker when he is one.
Force-Fed's Fifteen 3:48pm on 06 Jul 2009 Thanks #10, I am glad I am not the only one who thought that Roddick deserved to win, and thanks to all for saying that the final was actually not that great to watch, from the reaction on the telly I thought that I had found one of the 'great' matches boring.

As for Michael Owen, it made me smile, following all the negative headlines (one read something like, 'good news Michael, 2 clubs are interested, unfortunately they are Stoke and Hull'), that the biggest club in the country decided to take a chance on him. Then I remembered that he might rediscover his form and make them an even better team and stopped smiling. Then I remembered that if he rediscovers his form he might start banging them in for England again and the smile returned.

Back in the Real world 11:07am on 05 Jun 2009 Before I am accused of being a Chelsea or Man U fan, my team will be playing Boro next season...

But, in defence of the spending of Man U and Chelsea (and others) just having money does not do it on its own. In the case of Man U they were the wealthiest club in England right through the seventies and eighties and apart from an odd cup in the days when the cup was won by all sorts, they won little or nothing. As Robbo says, the fifth spending club was Newcastle and look how much that bought them.

Man U gradually built a team under a great manager and got to the top.

Chelsea were getting close before the Roman arrival. Ranieri, and before him Gullet and Vialli, had them winning cups and challenging at the top of the league. They already had Terry and Lampard. RAs money gave them the final push yes, but without everything already in place they would have struggled to have that impact.

The problem now is that once that set up is in place then the vast income from the champions league makes it far easier to stay there, so that the top 4 remains unchanged year on year. If Villa, Everton, Spurs, or anyone else, could break into it for a season and thus deprive one of the others of that money and comfort for a year it might make the whole thing more competitive again, which is what everyone outside the top 4 wants.

I do not like the way that some clubs are able to spend more money than the rest, but it is not enough on its own. Chelsea under Scolari would have lost to Everton once Everton scored. Same team stayed calm and outplayed Everton to come back and win the match. That wasn't money, that was good management. We wait to see if Man City can add the other ingredients to the money to become another Chelsea, or if they will be the next Newcastle...
Ashes preparation starts here 09:57am on 05 May 2009 The answer to number 6 in the medium term could come from Stuart Broad. He has shown a genuine ability with the bat, and needs to be tried further up the order to see if there is a genuine all rounder hidden in there.

To me the jury is still out on Flintoff, but he is certainly not a saviour, and shouldn't be considered a shoe in when fit.

For keeper I would go with Ambrose over Prior, his batting isn't much worse and his keeping is much better.
