Clawing back Sir Fred's pension 4:57pm on 03 Mar 2009 you know what I find REALLY amazing? all this about freds pension and hardly a murmour about the tax payer now underwriting £325bn of RBS debt!

How many other banks will the taxpayer also have to underwrite to achieve some sort of stability?

Freds pension - yes, if RBS had gone bust he would get about £20 statutory pa - and yes its a disgrace; but why hardly a mention of the £325 BILLION?

That bloke (Rogers) last week in my view was so clearly talking the £ down it was pathetic when he said ''well I was thinking of shorting the £, but then I didnt'' (BBC TV News report).

Not at all convincing - probably had the deal in his mothers name too!

Mr Soros? ''Who Knows'' but I bet again whatever he is up to its working very nicely for him.

Truth is, ''we'' will never know - these people are far too smart for that.
Map of the Week - Murder UK 09:18am on 22 Dec 2008 As I understand it, its not what weapon or cause of the death, 'Murder' is carried out with intent.

Manslaughter is the verdict where 'rage' (or accident) is the driving factor that lead to a death, but there was no intent. To me the distinction seem sensible.

Perhaps we really mean 'homicide' which I inderstand encapsulates both these and other 'killings'. Again, however, international comparisons can be fraught, but we have to draw the line somewhere - or we would never get any figures for anything.

I am happy to use the United Nations figures and definitions, which are actually for 2007 in my postings, not 2004 as I earlier suggested.

Map of the Week - Murder UK 11:18pm on 21 Dec 2008 No: 32 - I honestly did not read your comments as racist at all. I dont think its racist to mention foreign people or people of foreign origin for doing certain things.

It is a certain foreign culture that has 'mercy killings' for instance - it is not racist to say that - surely.

Other foreign people build amazing cars (the Germans) these are simply statements of fact, that I think you were eluding to.

As had been said in othe posts, it depends what figures are used and what those figures represent.

There was a spike in the UK to account for the 200+ Shipman (murder is recorded on upon a conviction)

These figures are published by the United Nations - make of them what you will; but your claim about our country being bolated needs a re-think. Especially if you take England alone.

Your friend may well be offered 7% and if the banks are lending that out as credit card debt for 20% its good profit. You are confusing this one lender for this one deal with this one person with squillions.

The banks can get cash much cheaper cash than 7% well in excess of your friends squllions, from normal depositors, and you know it. As the first respondent said ''am I missing something?''.

No, of course we dont like borrowing especially in this climate, but Robert, whats the answer?

Unfortunatley you are right lower tax revenues and higher Govt spending (on dole payments etc.,) if the cupboard is bare, the people out of work cannot feed their families - I am afraid the cash has to come from somewhere.

Also, if govt borrows for capital spending, thats not a bad thing as it sustains the economy and also creates assets - sort of ''asset backed finance'' lol!!

It has to be done and thats it. There is no magic wand for cash! If we aint got it - we have to get it (or starve) ''end of''.
