The fight over a Blair presidency 12:58pm on 25 Oct 2009 I'm mystified why Miliband thinks "It would be good for Britain and for Europe if Tony Blair became that candidate." Most of Britain does not wish to be associated with Blair - he's just tarnished goods, and certainly does not represent the best of British. Just how would it be to our benefit? Blair only looks after Blair, always has, always will.

And Europe? Can someone who has so overtly chosen GWB over his European allies, and the public opinion of his own country, and left us all up to our necks in the consequences of his arrogance really be first choice? Put aside all other considerations, if Blair is chosen it will be all about the man, and a disaster for the office of President, which is the really important thing.

Please let this man sink into the obscurity he deserves.
Changes to international pages 09:37am on 13 Jun 2009 Take shotgun, apply to foot, pull trigger. Situation normal at BBC. Bad decision in general (less choice), and the targeting of ads is truly stupid. I'm working in a Middle East Muslim country, and so far I've seen ads for both Christian and Israeli organisations. Sensitive indeed. If that's the best-tailored targeting Google can achieve for the BBC, then I can see any remaining users of the BBC website arund here leaving in droves.

A day at Heathrow as F1 seeks to end crisis 10:30am on 20 May 2009 Raising the issue of taxpayers is just a diversionary tactic by MM. A. It's untrue. B. Ecclestone has for year been saying the British Government (ie the taxpayer) should subsidise Silverstone, so I don't think he or Max cares a hoot what effect any F1 decision might have on taxpayers, as long as the two of them continue to prosper.

Because of Mosley's chumminess with Ecclestone, any official objectivity by the FIA in this matter is completely absent. Max and Bernie are in cahoots in a power game against the teams, and the wider interests of motorsport seem a long way away from their minds. Mosley should have gone long ago.

BBC and the Gaza appeal 12:13pm on 21 Mar 2009 TrueToo, whereas in the past your constant repetition of "anti-Israeli bias" might eventually have worn people down, these are different times. Now it just doesn't work. Israel's deliberate policies of ethnic cleansing, anexing land and disproprtionate military force are becoming apparent to many, substantiated by plenty of balanced data and reporting, a lot now from inside Israel itself. The tragedy is that a nation founded from the world's collective disgust and horror at the Holocaust should have so squandered its moral dignity and humanity that it can be judged by many to emulate the worst behaviour of past oppressors - and to have been cynically doing so virtually from its inception. Like many, I suspect, I grew up believing that Israel was a beacon of light, a small brave nation in need of our support. That belief is no more. It has been worn away by Israel's own actions and words, not those of others. I sense that in future times historians will look upon Gaza as the moment when Israel shot itself terminally in the head. When a nation's own soldiers are expressing disgust at what they are asked to do it is time to ask some hard and deep questions. It is Israel's apparent refusal to believe it too is somehow accountable to basic humanitarian principles that so saddens and angers.

BBC and the Gaza appeal 06:45am on 22 Feb 2009 Well, I see that the BBC Trust has upheld the decision of the BBC Director general, using in its explanation words that could have been lifted straight from Mark Thompson's own vapid and inadequate defence. It's a sad day indeed. The BBC should recognise that true impartiality is not the art of giving offence to no-one, but the rigorous application of sound and balanced principles and values in pursuit of the truth, whatever the circumstances, whoever is involved, and whatever the pressure to compromise. The BBC has squandered yet another part of its priceless heritage. It has long been in the pocket of UK's politicians rather than having a strong independent voice (see Greg Dyke's autobiography for depressing details), and Thompson has hammered another nail into its coffin, on which the Trust is now dancing. Today the BBC means nothing, represents nothing, commands no respect. Even CNN is better, while Al Jazeera has them both trumped. Nice job, boys. Reith would be proud of you all.
Evolution vs creationism 1:29pm on 16 Feb 2009 I'm glad to see that this discussion is a lot more probing and entertaining than the very thin original (sorry, unoriginal) piece. I know this is a blog, but couldn't it be a bit more substantial when dealing with such a cultural divide?
