Robbo's England World Cup squad 3:09pm on 15 Oct 2009 Regardless of what people want the teams to be it doesn't really matter as long as its fair and seeding teams is not a fair way to set up qualification for the WC finals. I would much rather see a tasty encounter between Portugal and France with a place in the finals on the line than see them meet in the competition.

As far as my earlier comments regarding the 'surprise element' go I think everyone recognises that taking Walcott to the last WC and not playing him was stupid but that fault lies with Sven. Personally I'd rather see Wilshere in the squad than Heskey (or worse Neville) and I think we have much more utility in the squad this time with players like Barry, Milner and Walcott able to cover a number of positions and this could afford us some options when picking the team.

PS Incidently does anyone else think Glen Johnson is the most overated player in an England shirt at the minute. Apparently being good at "getting into the box" makes up for the fact that he can't defend, is constantly out of position, gets caught in possesion and can't put a decent ball in even when he "gets into the box". Although I do accept there's little alternative........unless.....I wonder what Gary Neville's doing next summer?.....
Robbo's England World Cup squad 2:18pm on 15 Oct 2009 I actually like the idea of taking Beckham as I can genuinely see him being a difference maker as an impact sub. Becks knows this is his last chance of every winning anything on a World stage, he won't even make it to Poland in 2012. He will play his heart out when he's on the field and I'd much rather see Beckham step up for a freekick in the 90th min than Frank "I'll blast it off the wall" Lampard.

I'd like to see us take a surprise element to SA next year. A player who teams won't be able to anticipate. Jack Wilshere seems like the sort of person who could do this and as a cert to be an England player for the next generation it might do him some good to be around the current squad during a World Cup. I'd have Crouch, Defoe and Rooney up front knowing that Walcott can play RW but play up front if necessary.

Quartet face relegation nail-biter 6:55pm on 22 May 2009 I think that even if you put people's general feelings about Newcastle to one side they are a club that deserves to go down. Bad management off the field (Ashley, Wise) bad management on the field (Keegan, Allardyce, Hughton, Calderwood, Shearer) and a team of players who have not even close to pulled their weight mean Newcastle need to go down to start to rebuild from scratch. I feel sorry for Toon Army as Ashley will come out of this saying he's given the fans both Keegan and Shearer in the same season and they couldn't keep them up, Shearer will go back to MOTD saying he didn't have long enough to make a difference and the fans will be the ones to suffer.

I still think Newcastle can stay up however as Villa aren't playing good football at the minute and the draw they need is easily within their capability.

For the Wolves fans who were criticising babyTeenWolf I don't think you've necessarily picked up on his point. I don't feel that Wolves or Birmingham don't deserve to be in the Premiership at all but it's always nice to see teams who've never played in the league (or at least not for a while) make it as it adds variety to the league. I've nothing against Wolves, Birmingham, West Brom, Sunderland or Sheffield Utd (the usual teams) but i'd like to see the likes of Preston, Burnley, Cardiff and Swansea make it as they play good football and i'm sure their time is coming.

Damned United review 3:20pm on 27 Mar 2009 The success of the book is the fact that it is loosely based on the fact and more on what the author 'wants' to believe about Cloughie but there's nothing wrong with that. The book is after all a novel and not a biography and does not claim to be. I've just about finished reading the novel (day 39) and have enjoyed it far more than I expected as fictional or not it brings life into a book and film genre that is traditionally pretty barren (Gregory's Girl being the notable exception). Personally i'm looking forward to going to see the film and although I can understand the Clough families concerns over his portrayal perhaps they should just see it as the novel it is?
Burnley and Derby flying the flag for the Championship 12:43pm on 05 Jan 2009 It's hard not to be impressed by Burnley. They are a great club with a proud history and I fully expect them to make the jump to premiership football within the next 5 years. Having overcome both Chelsea and Arsenal this season they'll provide as stern an opposition for Spurs as any premier league team but as a Spurs fan I hope we have enough to overcome them over two legs. Derby on the other hand I fear are lambs to the slaughter for United and I would still expect the final to be Spurs Vs United.

The FA should throw the book at Drogba.......... but he'd only throw it back.

Coming to Maradona's defence 3:14pm on 04 Nov 2008 At the end of the day Maradonna did all that was necessary for his country to progress. Its not like he couldn't have scored anyway (and did later) but his passion dictated that he progress no matter what.

It's the same passion that allows England fans to maintain that the ball crossed the line in 66 (which it didn't) (or for that matter my father and brother to maintain that Enckleman didn't touch the ball from that throw-in against Birmingham and so the own-goal didn't count (which it does)).

Football is a passionate game and when players become passionate they will do whatever is necessary for their club or country. I do not blame Maradonna for the handball and nor do I blame him for not owning up to it. All I ask is that when Rooney dives for a penalty or Terry goes in a little harder than necessary that he excepts that its part of the game when playing for your national side
Kissing in the wind 2:52pm on 30 Oct 2008 The worst for me was Sol 'Judas' Campbell who having been bought through the Spurs academy, been given the chance and ultimately become Spurs captain after his defection decided to kiss the Arsenal badge after they won the title at White Hart Lane. He didn't care about Arsenal, he was just making a statement to the Spurs fans who had respected and trusted him. His 'love' for Arsenal then only lasted long enough for him to get of his contract for his dream move to Villareal. Then promptly signed for Pompey.

Completely agree that whether you love a club or are just a mercenary you don't have to prove it to the fans as they know who is there for their love of the club and who is there for a quick buck.

Anyone got a Chelsea badge for Ashley Cole to kiss?.......
