Devolution poll 9:19pm on 30 Jun 2009 As usual these debates on "independence" are akin to the 15th century vatican debates around "how many angels can dance upon the end of a pin".

This debate is meaningless without reference to the European Union. Where's the independence for a country that cannot even determine its' own tax policy? Or what level of investment goes into public services? Or where economic investment is to be targeted? And so on...?

New labour and the SNP are two sides of the same coin - they both need each other (the Tories and Lib Dems are irrelevant).
A political career shelved 10:24pm on 17 Jun 2009 Jim Devine has been caught with his pants down. So what? M.P.'s of the so-called main party are all culpable to a greater or lesser extent. Surely there cannot ever have been a bunch so shallow, irrelevant and self-serving? And I include Holyrood in that!

The sad thing about Devine is that at least he raised some substantial issues. e.g. Farepak, the pre-payment and the loan shark organisations that rip off those in greatest need. Perhaps he can regain (?) some credibility by staying on and pursuing his private members' Bill proposal for a regulatory framework and interest rate restraints for that unregulated industry?
Holyrood awakening 7:07pm on 29 Apr 2009 So no matter who is elected - if that means New Labour, Tory, Lib Dem or the SNP in Scotland - we are looking at devastating cuts in public spending throughout the country.

At the very least then we should be looking to ditch Trident, military adventures abroad, ID cards and other white elephants such as the NHS super computer.

Personally I would suggest socialist policies offer the most realistic way forward and none of the main parties will go down that route.

Now there are runs on countries 6:05pm on 23 Oct 2008 Thirty/forty years ago the British economy could have been described as a pyramid with 80% manufacturing/extraction industry supporting 20% service industry.

That pyramid has now been inverted as a consequence of many factors but particularly successive British governments and EU/EEC policy.

That's why I think we're so weak economically.

Regeneration of wealth creating industries is not just desirable but essential. The allusions in comments preceding to the miners' strike of 84/85 and the demise of coal, steel, shipbuilding and manufacturing industries are getting to the heart of the problem.

What Scargill said then and since has been proven correct.

You could have taken that metaphor a step further.

Plastic is derived from oil and most of the wealth from the North Sea has found its' way into the pockets of the big financial institutions and the their billionaire beneficiaries.
Superman or Clark Kent? 00:22am on 18 Oct 2008 I saw the BBC's Scottish political editor discussing SNP policy on Newsnight tonight prior to Salmond's interview.

It was nice to hear Brian Taylor emphasise that the SNP stand for "Independence in the European Union". That should be made clear far more so than it is as there is a world of difference between real independence and membership of the EU - although Iceland may not think so after having been hung out to dry.

Alex Salmond's interview seemed to consist of him denying and repudiating virtually every claim he's made over the last few years including an acknowledgement that he did not foresee any problems in the financial world until it happened. Of course, to be fair, he is not alone there!
Taxpayer should take note of bail-out 11:51pm on 14 Oct 2008 #187 ??? "Won't happen again"? (i.e. the crash).

In an "independent" Scotland? In Britain? In the EU? In the USA? Elsewhere?

I'll tell you something mate, It WILL happen again as long as capitalism is with us. Boom & slump or bubble and crash, however it's labelled it is inherent to that economic system.

Caveat: unless the current collapse is terminal of course! And who's to say it's not!
Emphasis on loyalty 4:29pm on 14 Oct 2008 Tony McNulty...his new role as Employment Minister...the Government thinks it will need a feisty Commons and media performer in the next few months.

Why? Unemployment going thro' the ceiling? More attacks on those at the bottom of the pile to fund the bail out?
