If you're going to be hosting on POV messageboard I just wanted to say welcome, and I hope you have a good time.

The POV board is the main part of BBC I use, so I can't really compare it with anywhere else - but I enjoy chatting about various TV programmes on there - I was especially sad to see former host Lee leave, because as I said to him he was probably the only other regular viewer of Eastenders and Doctor Who there.

Basically, I enjoy POV as it is, and haven't come here to moan but just to wish you luck!

ANyone who disagrees with you gets called a "looney leftie" anyone who disagrees with him is accused of being part of the MI6 conspiracy against him.

I think you've got a cheek accusing me of saying too much. I have made two posts to this messageboard, one expressing my immediate reaction to this drama around a week ago, and three whole paragraphs pointing out your patronising attitude to another poster and bad faith method in quoting as "gospel" words from a source you otherwise denigrate last night.

How many messages have you spewed over this board in the last week?

If you've got nothing to say except to call people names who disagree with you, why should I waste my time on you? You clearly haven't got a clue.

Eastendbhoy: No dear what it was about and I’ll quote the BBC in the media; The White season on BBC2 includes White Girl, about an 11-year-old who moves with her family to a Muslim community in Bradford and ends up wearing the hijab.

My comment: I think that SussexPat has a firmer grasp on the drama than a person who needs to go and read an "official" statement about a play to decide what to think about it. Especially when that person is using such a quote in bad faith.

You don't strike me as a person who takes what the BBC says in its official statements on trust in the normal run of things. Indeed, your posts persuade me that you think the BBC is full of looney leftie race traitors, just as you suggest that anybody who dares to argue with you is a looney leftie, or an idiot who believes what the loonie lefties say.

So, what are we supposed to think when you use one statement on a publicity website as if it were holy writ in order to make patronising comments about another person's interpretation of a drama, while the rest of the time you are ranting at us all to see how evil that organisation is? Are we supposed to take you seriously, or see through to the difficulties you have with making your points rationally?

Having read backwards through this thread until I reached this post from Wednesday, I'd like to award you a "clairvoyant" award for this comment.

Several of the people calling other posters "looney lefties" and the like have quoted the news about the number of girls being forced into marriage as some kind of evidence justifying their "all muslims are bad" viewpoint.

Just as you predicted!

Actually, Jimboy, it isn't true that this happens at all. This is just a Daily Mail scare story that does the rounds every year, like the one from the 80s about "looney leftie" councils that banned Baa Baa Black Sheep. That never happened either.

I thought this was a beautiful drama that showed that not all muslims are screaming extremists who want to go and blow up underground trains because they don't like the American and British armies invading Iraq.

Of course, I would say that - because even though I am a white man who grew up in this country, I met a few Baha'is when I went to University, and quite seriously considered joining their religion for a time. They accept Muhammad as one of their prophets too, so I was motivated to find out a bit more about Islam than the average native Englishman - and surprise surprise, for Muslims their religion is a real faith, just like it is for Christians, and just as not every Christian is a fire-and-brimstone anti-evolution fundamentalist, most muslims experience their religion as the place where they go to pray, the stories they tell their children, the routines of the year (time of the fast, etc).

I loved the way this was shot, from the point of view of young Leah - as she first came to Bradford, seeing the women behind their veils as scary and alien, but by the end of the drama, she felt comfortable among these people.

An excellent piece of work. The only thing that seemed slightly off to me was the age of the main character - she was supposed to be 11, but she seemed a little older than that - though if she hadn't been 11, she wouldn't have been at the same school with her little brother and sister. That's just a problem with casting, of course - quite difficult to cast a younger actress in such a demanding role.

I am surprised to read so many silly and ignorant comments on this site, however. I suppose I shouldn't be - people are just too uncomfortable with any image of Islam that doesn't pander to their prejudices.
